Hello

We'd like to expand the discussion 'categories' on the new version of Connosr as the current options are quite limited. I thought I'd ask for your input :)

I'd like to keep it fairly general (no sub-categories) with a maximum of 10 or 12. Obviously we will need to go through and recategorize some of the existing topics.

Current options:

General whisky chat Whisky news & releases Connosr news & updates Whisky resources: books, blogs etc

Possible new additions:

Whisky advice Whisky events Other drinks and spirits

Any advance on the above?

I wouldn't put too much effort into this. A good search engine obviates the need for categories.

Advice threads could go under General, events under news. No need to spent too much time on it unless the new site will have different boards for each category.

I agree with Nozinan. On this site and any others I visit, I just look to see what's current and jump into whatever's interesting. And if I'm hunting for something specific in the archives, I'll do a search rather than a browse.

Thanks for the honest feedback guys :) Perhaps the concept of discussion categories is a bit 'old school' forum anyway. The search capability on the new site is quite impressive @Nozinan

@Jean-Luc,

Connosr is a unique experience, and a positive one at that. There is one area that I wish could be expanded, the whisky library/listings/ratings. Have you addressed this?...or is it to be a surprise at the curtain raising!

Since a lot of members come here for advice from other members do you think a poll can be of benefit? eg Asking for members' opinion on a certain expression or a range? Could be part of a discussion.

Just brainstorming here.

@paddockjudge The full catalogue management overhaul is part of phase 2, which will be after the relaunch.

However, I have a added the follow feature in phase 1:

When creating a review, if the whisky isn't listed on Connosr, you can 'search the web' for a results from external sources. This gives us the image, abv etc and we store that reference with the review.

Once the catalogue has been overhauled this reference will make it much easier to connect the review with the new listing. I hope that makes sense.

@Jean-Luc @paddockjudge I almost didn't reply to this one as I didn't want to appear to be nit picking but I fully agree with the shortfall in the library department much more so than having several discussion categories. Then I thought if I don't say something I am part of the problem. For the past year I have been frequenting Whisky Base more and more as I use their "Whisky collection" in preference to "ours" If I come across a bottling which they do not support (very infrequently I might add) it is easy to take a picture and submit the particulars Voila the database is updated also when I want to find reviews I merely click on the expression that interests me and instantly get all related info. I guess what I am saying is that my thoughts go more toward a quick remedy of the library problem with Connosr than any other upgrades. Yours is still my favourite site due mainly to the quality of the posters here.

@Jonesz It's very important that we get the library / catalogue up to date and it is being addressed.

Revising the discussion categories was a small passing thought and isn't something which would distract us from the job in hand.
