- Batch: Ex-bourbon & Cognac Barrel Finish cask #16
When the corona crisis hit, Bart Joosten from Eaglesburn launched an appeal to pre-order his next release, so that he could create enough cask flow to keep the stills operational. The bottles would be delivered in October this year. Knowing what great stuff he makes, I ordered four bottles. Today, the bottles arrived so I immediately made some time for them. The unique selling point of this young malt is the fact that it was finished on a cognac cask.
Oh, what a lovely nose indeed. Silky soft with the typical DNA of Eaglesburn (mandarin, wood shaving, gingerbread) upholstered with lovely bright notes of young apples in a frying pan, sprinkled with some cinnamon. Must be from the cognac cask. Caramel and thyme join the fray. Develops nicely in the glass and can hide it’s young age quite well. Great.
Feisty on the palate. Nicely creamy at first, filling the mouth completely, before the fruity and wood notes kick in. Apple, oranges, peach and apricots are followed by cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Very round and tasty.
Nicely long, warm, spicy and sweet finish.
The best Eaglesburn so far. A Dutch liquid dessert. Next year I plan a ‘new kids on the block’ online tasting and I will put this one in there with pleasure.
