The Savanna Rum finished Edradour is old stock, meaning distillate that was produced by the owner before Symington and his team took over (which was in 2002). It was bottled in half liter bottles at cask strength.
Ouch, this truly hurts my nose. I feel like I am standing in the lab of an pharmacist. The sweetness from the nose is relentlessly pushed to the back by something that can only be described at disinfectant. But do not despair! This evaporates quickly, to make room for a surprising sweetness in the shape of green banana in sugar cane (which is a delicious dessert, by the way). Vanilla and a touch of citrus budge in.
On the palate, though, I am left wanting a bit. The sweetness of the rum cannot camouflage the rather flat spirit. It has a nasty sour edge. Something that reminds me of wood rot. Actually a bit foul. Yikes.
The finish is fairly long and spicy, but that is no advantage in this case.
Not my quaich of whisky, I am afraid. It is this type of Edradrou that gives it its bad rep, I think. Thanks for the sample, Glen!
