Edradour is a distillery with a botchy reputation. Their whisky is often called Edrasour, accompanied with a sneer. But we have to be honest – that time is passed. Since Andrew Symington took over, he and his team have been working hard on wood management and other improvements. There is still a lot of work to be done to ameliorate the reputation, though. Maybe this Fairy Flag bottling can help. It matured for 8 years on bourbon casks and then was allowed another 7 years on fresh oloroso sherry casks.
On the nose I get dried fruit like raisins and plums, while I also have smoked ham and walnuts. The sherry clearly has had a lot of impact, because upon the second whiff I also get chocolate, leather and some mint. Quite creamy, in fact. But so far I am not yet flabbergasted, for it also has a strange note in there that I cannot quite put my finger on, but does raise my eyebrows.
It has a creamy, full body and is quite powerful upon arrival. Again the sherry is in the lead with dried fruit of the dark variety, walnuts, chocolate and loads of caramel. Cinnamon, saffron and some chili are the spices at work.
Long, sweet and spicy finish.
The nose was not very convincing, but on the palate, this is quite a nice Edradour. Around 75 EUR. The Fairy Flag, by the way, is a soon to be released Scottish movie about the Clan MacLeod and its flag which is rumored to have magical powers. And the title of this tasting note? That’s Fairy Flag in Celtic.
