Eggnog talk

@cricklewood
cricklewood started a discussion

I initially wanted to find a spot to inquire about the Evan Williams eggnog but then I figured it could be interesting to expand the discussion further.

  1. Has anyone tried the Evan Williams eggnog? I noticed the LCBO stocks it this year and since I'm heading to Toronto I was curious if it's worth trying or if it's total dreck.

  2. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I realized commercial eggnog in a milk carton was a thing and that folks actually drank it cold!

I grew up drinking what they call Chaudeau in the West Indies or Guadeloupe specifically. It is essentially a type of eggnog that is often made with evaporated milk, heavily laced with rhum or brandy and served piping hot. It is customary not only during the Christmas holidays but also on other occasions like weddings, baptisms etc.

So it was shocking the first time I was presented with the ultra-sweet, nutmeg heavy commercial offerings found in supermarkets at this time of year. I've since come to terms with the temperature thing, I can appreciate a well made eggnog cold but still have issues with most commercial varieties made.

Does anyone have good eggnog or holiday/winter centric cocktails they would like to share? I have to admit I've never thought of using whisky/bourbon in the recipe...silly I know.

@cricklewood I like the sound of yours better than anything we ever had. We usually just dumped a good jag of cheap rum into that sickly sweet stuff from the supermarket. I'm sure the hipsters will have something much better than the crap we boomers drank. grimacing

@BlueNote I don’t like the grocery stuff at all. There is an artificial taste to it. I like making my own eggnog. With whipped egg whites and everything

@BlueNote it's an acquired taste to have it hot, the richness plays up quite differently that way but it's a nice way to finish off the night.

@Nozinan I've yet to find a commercial brand that really does it for me, I know the artificial note you speak of and the fact that the spice profile lacks nuance is usually a deal breaker for me.

Would you care to share your recipe or process for the one that you make?

@cricklewood, here's an old family recipe handed down over the years. I enjoy it a lot, a bit of effort is required, but it is well worth it.

Ingredients: one egg, fresh nutmeg, one tsp yellow sugar, half can evaporated milk, three ounces brandy, one cup or goblet.

Place all ingredients on counter. Pour brandy into cup, taste test.....repeat when necessary....perfect every time.

@cricklewood It has probably been a couple of decades since I made it, long before I discovered whole nutmeg. I don't know if I can find the recipe but if I do I'll send it.

My guess is Smith and Cross would excel in this.

@paddockjudge ...and do something creative the next morning with the raw egg to alleviate the vicious hangover. stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes

@paddockjudge I've indulged in this type of eggnog recipe often...basically anytime I'm home by myself and can't be bothered to put together anything.
