FEW Spirits is located in Evanston, Illinois and produces a range of spirits, going from American gin to bourbon. The funny thing is that the distillery can be found in the exact same street in which the Temperance Movement was active so many decades ago. This movement eventually led to Probibition. There is a regular version at 40% ABV, but I will try the cask strength version of this FEW Bourbon.
The nose is quite special and does not at all relate to any bourbon I have nosed before. I mostly get the crust of a double baked white bread. This is upholstered with earthy notes and some green garden herbs. Hints of aniseed and coriander. Some cooked ham. It is creamy, but not at all sweet.
It is creamy, soft and – contrary to the nose – very sweet on the palate. Think dark berries and raspberries. The spices now remind me of cloves and cinnamon, but also a hint of mint giving it a fresh touch. The sweetness evolves – unfortunately – to something that reminds me of candy. An almost chemical sweetness. Pity.
The finish is very long and very spicy on all kinds of woodspices.
The nose had me a tad worried, but on the palate and certainly in the finish, it got back on track. Not easy to find in my neck of the woods.
