Gibson's 18 has a new skin.

Say good-bye to Gibson's 18 as we knew it.

I've been watching the Gibson's transition for a few years. The packaging transformation began with the quiet disappearance of the acorn-style stopper on Sterling and then the 12 year-old. This was followed by a label change on Gibson's Finest 12 year-old in the spring of 2015 followed soon after with the word RARE appearing on yet another new 12 year-old label; at this time both the 12 YO and 18 YO were RARE. The next batch of 18's to hit store shelves had become Gibson's Finest VENERABLE 18 Years.

Hang in there, only one more change. Today I purchased a bottle of Gibson's Finest VENERABLE, new label and a barely noticeable 18 cryptically embedded in a somewhat plain label. The neck sleeve sports a maple leaf on a shield which supports the silhouette of a large rodent guarded by silhouettes of an elk and a caribou, both on their hind legs (who comes up with this stuff?)...all this to proclaim that it is AGED 18 YEARS (in size 6 font). The acorn-style stopper is now gone. The red wax 18 medallion has been replaced by a gold button which looks like 1B.

Each change in the packaging was a subtle signal of the transition from the great Canadian distillery on the isle of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC, in the mighty St. Lawerence River, to North America's largest volume distillery located in Windsor, ON.

Gibson's VENERABLE remains a great whisky. This current batch hits the shelves, albeit in very small numbers, just in time for the holiday season. As I sip on a generous pour from the new style glass bottle, I wonder if any more changes are in store.

The 18 hasn't been included on Gibson's website for some time now - ever since the site redesign well over a year ago. Not really sure why, maybe they were holding off on including it until this new bottle redesign.

Could you post some pictures of the new bottle? I'm quite curious. If not, no worries, I'm sure I'll come across one before long.

Last time I was shopping, I noted that Gibson's Venerable 18 also had a new price tag...

@Spitfire Oh? Higher or lower?

In Ontario the regular price dropped $0.50 to $74.45 in early 2015, but it's been holding steady since. Not counting a temporary sale I heard of, but missed out on. :(

Up here. It was around $85 at the BC Liquor Store last time I was in a branch that carried it (none of my local outlets do). I'm pretty sure I paid less for the one bottle I did buy--but that was at an independent shop, so maybe that was the difference.

The next change took only one week to occur. @Spitfire, $90 price this morning, up from the recent price of $75 and a long way from the $65 of only two years ago. A 40% increase in only two years is outrageous.

Well, I have 1 unopened bottle left from the $54/bottle clearance I tripped over some time ago. That will be my last when it's gone.

@Astroke,

Hamilton has the best liquor discounts...look for more to happen when $90 Gibson's doesn't move.

For the curious, here are some pictures of the new bottle. A significant downgrade if you ask me, I much prefer the old bottle. And the new price? Ugh. I do believe they've lost me as a customer. It's very good stuff, but I've never paid $90 for a bottle of whisky and I'm not about to start now. There's plenty of very tasty options at half the price.

And for those unfamiliar with Gibson's 18, here's the old bottle: i.imgur.com/iv7X6fP.jpg That's from when it was called "Rare" and not "Venerable" but aside from that word the look is identical.

@paddockjudge, looking at the pictures now it seems as if the whisky is also a fair bit darker. I didn't notice that in the store... Is that just how it looks on the photos, or would you say it's also darker in person?

@Nelom,

the whisky appears to be slightly darker. It may be a function of the new bottle and label. I recall Eagle Rare looked darker when the label was changed a few years ago, but it wasn't darker. The only way to tell is to pour them side by side.

I mentioned that the price was bumped to $75 two years ago, it was in fact three years ago....still outrageous.

Price Overide Bin Ticket Incorrect.

I stopped by my favourite local store to purchase a gift for the birthday party I'll be attending tonight. While performing the customary tour of the whisky section I discovered the old price ticket for Gibson's 18, it had not been removed from the shelf after the realignment. I gathered two at $75 each and saved $30.
