A Glen Moray Distillery Exclusive? That must have been a gift from Anthony Van Sele. He is a fan of this distillery and often goes to visit his very own casks that are slowly maturing in their warehouses. Obviously when he visits he takes the opportunity to fill a bottle of their distillery exclusive. He offered me a sample of their last one: a Cider Cask! I was told that the finish even took two years. Interesting.

Yes, the apples are unmistakable on the nose. Apple sauce, Granny Smith, vanilla, lemon juice and grapefruit wrapped in some sweet malt. A bit of wood spices, but very soft. Quite basic on the nose, but at the same time very pleasing (that may have to do with the time of tasting – today is the hottest day in Belgium since records began!).

Very creamy and sweet with again a truckload of apples on the palate. The cider cask took its job seriously. Then some white pepper, a bitter note from grapefruit and lemon, making this malt quite fresh and summery. Despite the high ABV, it does not need any water.

Only in the finish do you get an inkling of the high strength, but it does not disturb at all. At the death I get an extra note of wet wood and an uppercut of pepper. The mouth is left completely dry.

I’m not a big fan of Glen Moray, but this one is actually quite nice. Thanks, Anthony.
