This Glen Moray was only available from the visitor center at the distillery, provided you had £100 to spare. The cask has been replaced by now, making this quite a unique opportunity. So thanks a lot, Arnout! It comes from a sherry cask, which can be deduced clearly from the colour. The whisky was bottled at a whopping cask strength of 58,7%.
The nose is succulent on rum raisins, beeswax, dades, dried oranges and fresh figs. A whole other Glen Moray than the bourbon cask matured expressions I have tried. Very soft on the spices.
Wonderfully creamy on the palate, but absolutely not biting, despite the high ABV. Sweet on figs, dades and raisins, with a lot of spices now, like nutmeg and a mix of peppers. Water is superfluous. Hints of chocolate and espresso. Quite pleasant, without being truly grand.
The finish is long and sweet, while it remains spicy. The oak finally also starts to speak, making it slightly drying.
One of the best Glen Moray I have had the pleasure to try. Fine after dinner dram.
