Bar a mistake on my part, this is Asta Morris’ first outing to Glen Moray. A surprising choice if you know that this distillery is something of an underdog. But we all know that this will not stop Crazy Bert. He selects whisky on one basis only: taste. Fuck popularity or hype. Only if the liquid it good enough, Bert will smack his label on it. This one is very pale to say the least.

Oh, my, this is something else. On the nose I get white bread – double baked – and some… err… do not laugh, I’m serious: bapao! Really, this is barely sweet, but all the more umami and nicely spiced in an oriental fashion. Eggroll fritters. I cannot stop laughing. Crazy Bert did it again!

On the palate, the distillery character is much more discernable. Sweet breakfast cereals, European orchard fruit, hay, white chocolate and some popcorn. A bittersweet note emerges. Quinine? Grape pith and the skins of kiwi. A touch sharp. Paper and even some flints as it were.

The finish is fairly long on white pepper and vanilla, apples and gooseberries.

Ha! My 25th Glen Moray. And I while I am not flabbergasted – it’s a tad too special for me and I’m not very fond of Glen Moray at any rate – the nose is an absolute terrific experience. The bottle can be yours for 170 EUR. No cheap, but not overly expensive either for this atypical Glen Moray. Leave your prejudice on the side when opening the bottle. I had a great time!
