There is a lot of information on this bottle, ex bourbon cask, distilled 23rd July 1999, bottled 14th March 2006, bottle 101 of 330. The whisky itself is pale and straw coloured.
The nose is instantly engaging with smoky the main theme, kipper and bacon as well as peat smoke, that’s not all though some clove like spice and liquorish is evident when you delve a little deeper into the aroma.
Lots of attack on the palate as you’d expect given the age of the malt and the relatively generous percentage, but I resist the urge to add water. The peat takes over from the smoke as the main theme (they weren’t kidding on the label) with barley malt and fruity hints (lime, pears and grapefruit?) and a pleasing saltiness. The finish is long with the peat fading to leave a pleasant barley sweet and salty aftertaste.
It makes one wonder why so much malt whisky is aged so long.
