This bottle was re-gifted to me by my aunt, and I was pretty excited to try it, knowing absolutely nothing about it. Turns out is an American blended whiskey finished in California wine casks.

Nose: Uh oh. Something is wrong here. The first word that springs to mind is "plastic". It is a sour, sickly-sweet, chemical mixture on the nose and frankly it turns my stomach. I mean that literally; I feel carsick after smelling it for just a few seconds. This can't be good.

Taste: Against my better judgement I go for a sip, trying to ignore the plasticky notes and see if there is anything to this. What I get is rotten-tasting fruit, cloying perfume, solvent-like spirit, and that's about it. My nose and mouth are both telling me this might be toxic.

Finish: Sour, bitter, and not short enough.

Balance: If I was the supreme ruler of the world, I would fine every judge at the San Francisco Spirits Competition ten thousand dollars for awarding this Double Gold. I now understand why American blended whiskey isn't really a thing in Canada. This tastes like poorly-made grain spirits matured in a rotten cask. Truly noxious stuff.

Congratulations! You may have discovered a whisky worse than Lambertus! Frighteningly, I would love to try it...

@Astroke None near me. 1 in Ancaster. If you pick it up maybe we can trade for my Old Scout that is open.

@Nozinan Actually showed one in Stoney Creek but of course when I went it to grab it I was told that they have not had any since Christmes. Typical LCBO inventory explanation that came off like Charlie Browns teacher speaking.

@Nozinan maybe a Found North batch 7 and some others could replace the mini gold bar, besides your thoughts on what may be the best blended Canadian whisky might serve better.

Glad I've never even heard of this stuff until now.

If anyone is near Guelph, I would gladly trade a sample.

A friend of mine let me try some of his "worst whiskey" from Hawaii, and it wasn't even close. That stuff was like, I dunno, George T. Stagg compared to this.

I may be travelling through Guelph on the next few months. A friend has a startup and is working with a lab in London and we may have to do a site visit. So I may be passing through. I am sure I can find some good whisky to trade for it.

@RianC I would gladly trade away, nay, give away Lambertus to anyone who wants to try it. but since I WANT to try the gold bar... I would feel obligated to throw in something good too.

@Nozinan Well, I have almost a full 750ml. Tried making a mixed drink. Took one sip and down the drain it went. I can't believe people pay for this stuff.

@Megawatt - possibly a bad batch ... thinking smile

I once had a Glenfarclas 12 that was all sourness and zero sherry - I couldn't even blend it out! Mind you, GF are known for their inconsistency.

A Writer's Tears I had was similar - tasted like it had gone bad or something, yet the first bottle was beautiful.

Bad batch or not though, I won't be buying a bottle slight_smile
