My wife doesn't let me date...
Especially old bottles. She insists that I finish the bottles I already have first.
Seriously, if you have a dusty bottle of 12 YO, it's still 12 YO +/- old bottle effect. But some whiskies have changed over time. One thing you can do is look to see if there is a code on the bottle. You can contact the distillery if you have a code.
Also, you can look at the label. Many change from time to time. Then google the labels and that may give you a clue

@buoy37 - Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but some information here might be useful. Also, follow the link at the top of the page for answers to some questions you may have.

I just use a Google image search to narrow it down and then once I've got the general decade sorted, I look for clues on the label and/or bottle. Usually you can get to within a year or two of the bottling date with freely available information online (unless you're looking at something completely obscure).

@buoy37 Great discussion, this is the kind of info that I really enjoy tracking down. As @Nozinan says my admiral/wife doesn't let me date either, good luck with the dusties that you found. :)

Is there a good website to date a bottle of Scotch? My Google searches have turned nothing but retailers of old bottlings.
I found some "dusties" this afternoon that I would like date.
