Does the distillery of Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel still need an introduction? I think not. His Old No 7 is one of the bestselling bourbons in the world. But today we are trying the No 27 Gold, which was meant initially for the Duty Free Range, but is now easily obtainable outside the airports as well. It is double matured: first on American oak and then in casks made of the famous sugar maple, the tree that is also used for the Lincoln County Process. The number 27 does not mean all that much. The 7 refers to the old bestseller (that takes its number from the fact that Jack Daniel’s was the 7th distillery in the States to get a licence), while the 2 simply refers to the double maturation.

Creamy and rich nose on raisins, plums, tobacco leaves, something rum-like and spices. Surprisingly soft, to be honest. After a few moments, some walnuts kick in.

Nice mouthfeel: silky soft and mildly seasoned upon arrival. Next to the raisins, I now get a truckload of honey and a hint of chocolate. Maple syrup, dried figs, tobacco. It is completely toothless and I mean that in the nicest possible way. No bite whatsoever, not alcoholic and not too spicy. It makes this one dangerously quaffable.

The finish is rather short, but soft and sweet.

This is only my 5th Jack so far, but it is certainly my favorite, due to its soft character. Unfortunately too expensive for what you get.
