Lexington Bourbon Whiskey is an independent bottling sourced from some distillery unknown to me. There is no age statement on the bottle, and the whiskey is NOT labeled STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY, so it is assumed to be aged for less than 2 years. The colour is quite light for a bourbon. Sequential format will be used in this review
Nose: fragrant, perfumed, spicy from rye; strong and beautiful. This is the high point
Taste: strong sweetness and excellent rye flavours; the wood flavours are adequate in strength but not so great in quality, because this is just too young to obtain a rich wood influence. Young US whiskeys often use heavy char as a short cut to obtain stronger wood flavours with short, eg less than 3 years, aging. It just doesn't work for me, and the flavours resulting from heavy char and brief aging are not equivalent to doing an adequate wood aging of bourbon, usually requiring 4 years minimum with 6 years or more preferred. I would love to taste this Lexington Bourbon Whiskey after 6 years in the wood
Finish: very sweet with the other flavours fading first. The wood flavours are mediocre at best
Balance: few bourbons work well younger than 4 years
NB this review is of a sample from a newly opened bottle.
