The next whisky in this little Macallan line-up comes from a bourbon cask. It is a single cask that was bottled by A.D. Rattray in 2011.
The nose is surprisingly fresh and floral. Dried grass and heathery flowers. Soft honey. A whole lot of white fruit, mostly Granny Smith apples, baked with a sniff of cinnamon. Cider. Cake. Soft garden herbs.
The attack is very gentle and for a minute it seems to go the wrong way. But then the honey and spices take the lead and allow the fruitiness to display itself. Loads of apples and pears. Vanilla. Mild tannins. Eminently quaffable.
The finish is rather short and lingers on those apples.
This is a typical card players whisky. Sweet and accessible. And affordable too, with its price tag of around 50 EUR. Thanks, Jurgen, for the sample.
