Of this Swedish distillery (which has just started distilling in a whole new factory, turning the old one into a museum), I have tried a few. At the recent Whisky Festival in Ghent, I scored a sample of this newest Mackmyra Reserve, a single sherry cask from 2009.
The nose is sweet, but also green, if you know what I mean. I get some garden herbs and celery salt over gingerbread, raisins and fresh figs. Hint of coffee. A touch of coconut and apple skins. Softly spiced.
Creamy arrival, fairly soft. The fruit is less outspoken, the spices ever more so. But midpalate, the oak kicks in, making it somewhat bitter and very dry. Oh, well, young animal of course. It is very sweet. Too much to my taste. Does not need water.
The spices overpower the fruit in the medium long finish, but it all ends in a rather woody note.
A nice whisky, that can certainly brighten up the house on a cold winter night.
