I've already been lucky enough to taste quite a few Distillers Edition from Oban. Eight to be precise, but this release from 2018, a distillate from 2004, had escaped my lips until now. Recently I organized 'One Night in Oban', an online tasting, and I took the opportunity to put this version in the line-up. As a reminder, the Oban Distillers Edition gets a second maturation on Montilla Fino sherry casks. I've only just put my nose in the glass and I'm already sold. So deliciously fruity on apricots and mandarins with a hint of banana and gooseberry. Oban's somewhat salty DNA may be drowned out a bit, but this is just absolutely delicious on the nose. Oban's DNA is beautifully expressed on the palate, though. That salty edge and the pebbles on the beach that I get from this distillery appear first and are then nicely wrapped by yellow and candied fruit. Apricots, peaches, banana... first juicy and then dried. It makes this malt a pleasure. I wouldn't really call it complex, but satisfying nonetheless. The finish is medium-long and sweet with a salty edge. Again an Oban that does not disappoint. The Distillers Edition 1998 remains my absolute favorite, but it comes pretty close.
