Never heard of Old Rhosdhu? Nae worries, you are not alone! There are only about 40 releases worldwide. It’s a malt style that was distilled at the versatile Loch Lomond distillery between 1966 and 2000. Manny and I found a cask that was filled in February 1993, so this malt matured for almost three decades.

Incredibly good and fruity nose. Apples, pears, mandarin and pineapple – on a pancake and sprinkled with icing sugar. Very soft and seductive. Hint of Sirop de Liège and marzipan. Delicious soft bitter nose from grapefruit. Very, very good.

Perfect drinking strength! Nicely oily and mouth coating. Fruity on litchi, sultanas, apple juice, grapefruit (pith included) and pineapple. Wow, this just stumbled into the top 5 of my favorite MMM releases (okay, sorry for the self-promotion, but it’s true). Soft prickle from the spices. Excellent balance.

The finish is bittersweet, softly drying and… yes, this makes me long for another dram. Oh, well, YOLO.

Tasted blind you just might confuse this with Littlemill, I kid you not. The best malt I’ve tried from Loch Lomond so far. But honor where honor is due: it was Manny who convinced me to bottle this, despite the higher price category. But really: worth every penny!
