When winter arrives, I always try some Islay whiskies. Makes sense, right? And Port Ellen samples are always something to look forward to. I keep them for last. Let me start with this 22 Year Old from the Old Malt Cask series by Douglas Laing.

The nose is clean, but very salty and slightly medicinal. A small sweetness in the shape of almonds, litchi and red apples. Some vanilla (which becomes quite loud if you wait for it), but also a bitter edge as from walnut skins. Touch of eucalyptus in the background. Citrus, naturally. The smokiness is not really outspoken. After five to ten minutes some toffee pushes the salt away. Complexity, anyone? This is textbook PE.

Nice arrival on sweet fruit, creamy on vanilla with a hint of pepper. Loads of salt and liquorice, ginger and lemon. The peat is sweet and delivers a nice smokiness, bigger than on the nose. The oak finds its voice. Something floral, which is quite unexpected, but works wonders.

Nice long and warm finish on salt and sugared lemon peel.

What a beauty! The apparently inexhaustible stock of Port Ellen from Douglas Laing keeps scoring very high.

Thanks for another intriguing review WhiskyBee! I found this farclas to be a really good surprise considering i bought it on a bit of a whim! As rigomorole pointed out, i find it blends wonderfully with the 12 year old, a coincidence as i think they are the 2 most underestimated malts in the farclas stable. Many seem to have noticed that weird dusty-ness or damp old wood note before it opens up or get its dose of oxidation, a lovely old-timer that needs patience
