On December 7th I joined a tremendous Signatory 30th Anniversary Tasting. I drove two hours, but who wouldn’t for this kind of tasting? The last whisky in the line-up was this 35 years old Port Ellen. I had been a while since I last tasted a Port Ellen and did not want to miss this opportunity. Delicious nose on sweet, smoky malt, chalk and jute, fish oil, white fruit and some seaweeds, but subtly upholstered with sweet fruit like apricots and peach. Some flint. Wet rocks, a sea breeze and smoldering wood. I am in seventh heaven already. Suprisingly subtle but top notch Port Ellen with gravel, citrus, sea shells on the beach, olive oil and a drop of balsamico. Very herbal and mineral. Machine oil, white grapefruit, oak. Wake me up, I must be dreaming. The finish is very long with a minerality I haven’t experienced in quite a while. Stunning, as they say. Subtle but flabbergastingly good Port Ellen. Sure, 1900 EUR is a lot of money. No bottle of whisky could ever be worth this, could it? That would mean my glas of 2cl would be about 57 EUR. Well, it’s the best money I spent all year! Ordered me a bottle to put under the Christmas tree. Yolo!
