@ewhiskey - try drinking some - if it is a realy nice whiskey, then it is worth a lot...if it ain't so good, then you paid too much.

@paddockjudge -Thanks for you opinion, but not quite the advice I was looking for. I tried it when my friend brought back one of the 2 bottles the seller had to sell when he was in Italy for work. It's good. Different from today's Woodford Reserve. Rather minty actually. Upon his return to Italy this year, he offered to bring me back a bottle. This seller has a massive inventory of wines and spirits that was left to him by his father. The Woodford Reserve fell into my price range, but he has bottles of all kinds. Glenfiddich Mary Queen of Scots, Brora 24, Bruichladdich 14, Ardbeg 1976, just to name a few. Paddockjudge, I wanted to know the value of the whisky. What I paid for it and what I do with it is my business. I was inviting educated collectors to offer me some advice. Yours to me seemed non objective and somewhat judgemental. Thanks anyway though.

of course we are judgmental, collectors are essentially the cause of expensive bottles and far too expensive overpriced special releases. So yes expect some harsh remarks on a site that's essentially all about drinking and appreciating whisky instead of valuating it on its price. But yes, in the end it is all up to you. What is the price be? Probably what the fool pays for it? There are a few whisky auction sites out there, where you might find some for sale now. Or you could always ask them to assist you in valuating your bottle, they are better informed about the current market price.

@Pandemonium - Thank you for your opinion. I will have to brace myself for the harsh judgements I should expect when posting. I am very open to constructive criticism. I will inquire with the whisky auctions.
@paddockjudge - Sorry if my response was too harsh. I applied thought and content into my post and was hoping for something similar in return. Your response did have meaning and carried your own personal opinion and I should have respected that. Not sure why the thumbs down, but really, I won't lose sleep over it.
Thanks again, and on another note, I recently bought a bottle of Wiser's Legacy Canadian whisky. It is phenomenal, you guys should give it a try.

@ewhiskey - harsh?...what does it matter? You call that content? Try a little research rather than a self-centric ego-post.
You are late to the party with your advice about the Legacy, but what does it matter, as you have 'content'...those too are my opinions.

@paddockjudge - This discussion has clearly escelated to a new level. I am sincerely sorry if I have offended you by a particular remark, or the entire discussion. I posted my question because I didn't know the answer to it. I chose not to be ignorant. I had also contacted Woodford Reserve dircetly before and that's where I got any information that I did provided in the original post. But really, it was never my intention to offend anyone.
In efforts to mend the tension, I attempted to bring up another topic by recommending a whisky I recently discovered. Sorry that I was late on it, but It only became available in Quebec over the past couple of months.

@ewhiskey - Now we are getting somewhere. I agree with your assessment of the Wiser's Legacy.
I hope you continue to explore the Legacy, and if you are so inclined, perhaps you may be able to find a different batch with which to compare this one. They are all fantsatic; however there are subtle differences from one batch to another. I find the early releases to be the benchmark and have noticed an increased pithiness in the 2012 batches, but nonetheless, still great. I've had the opprtunity to try ~20 bottles from 7 or 8 batches and have not yet been underwhelmed by this exciting expression.
I would very much like to hear more of the details surrounding the bottle of Woodford Reserve, especially any information from the Distillery..

This discussion seems backwards. Ewhiskey asked a sincere question originally, and didn't receive a sincere answer by paddock judge. (an unasked question was answered). Not sure why he is being shunned with negative comments and there is support on the other peoples posts??? Am I in the twilight zone?

@ewhiskey
I think you've hit what is possibly an exposed nerve among whisky enthusiasts.
This whisky forum (like many others) has a number of active members who see it as a place to discuss their enthusiasm for whisky, and are understandably concerned that it not be turned into a different type of forum, one that focuses on collecting, buying and selling.
It's been my experience (both personal - I learned not to discuss "overuse" - and observational) that anything that deviates from the "purpose" is very quickly "attacked". I believe that this is what you've experienced.
Looking at your original post, I think the issue was with the last paragraph.
Please understand, I too have a few dusties and rare finds and I occasionally look up to see how much they might be worth, as many of us do, but I have no intention of selling any of them, just curious as to how available a replacement might be or what a good deal I got at the time. But this isn't really the forum for that kind of thing.
I encourage you to share your enthusiasm for the enjoyment part, and I think you'll find the community very welcoming in that respect.

Wise words from Nozinan, I must say.
I'm something of a neophyte here myself, but I would add that your post also smacks a bit of desperation; whether you mean it or not, it sounds like you might be wondering if you got ripped off or something. Again, that's not really the sort of thing people talk about too much here. If anything, you'll hear, "Should I drop $X on this particular dram?" but that's about it.
So, how should you treat your bottle? Just take care of it. Don't put it somewhere where it's got light on it and the temperature varies. When the time is right, open it up. And when you do, bloody well drink it within a year or so -- don't let it sit forever lest it oxidize on you.
That's all there is really.

Well thanks for all of the comments. I've learnt that I touched upon a sensitive topic amongst this community. To be honest with this group, I actually got a very good deal on the bottle. $75 CAD. It was priced before the seller's father passed away and he never adjusted the prices since. I was excited because I never owned a bottle like it. I was just curious of what it might be worth. It is sitting comfortably in my cabinet inside it's original carton, so I don't think light will be an issue. I am sure many of you have more impressive bottles of your own, but this one is certainly my most impressive bottle. Maybe there will be more to come.
Anyway, I have enjoyed discussing whisky on this website in the past and I will continue to do so. I will just choose my topics wisely.
Cheers!

@Maltmark - you are correct, this discussion is upside down. There has previously been spamming/spinning of bottles for sale etc. This site will not be hijacked; I believe that is clearly understood.
No malice intended.

How does a simple question become so controversial? @ewhiskey I, too, have some whiskies that are very rare and are unopened and yes as Pandemonium said sell them if "some fool" comes calling . I also have collectible cars and not once as anyone ever been" judgmental" on my owing them or selling them. It's your bottle. If you want to drink it, save it, or pour it down the drain that's your decision. Kudos to you for having the courageous to ask the question.

I prefere drinking my whiskey, but sometimes when you get something that doesn´t is in my intrest, i usually change them or sell them in a fb Community im a member of. And whiskyprices are ridiculos in some cases. I have a friend with the largest collectio of Benriach. And he plans to have World biggest whiskytasting this year in november 100 whiskies in 2 Days. about 700 Pound or 6900 Swedish Crowns and food is included. I will be there having a camper on the outside!

@softailman - That whisky tasting sounds intense. You are sure to enjoy some really good whiskies, and by then, I am sure they will all seem really good. On March 1st, I went to a beer, bourbon and bbq festival in Atlanta. I cruised around the tent trying different whiskies from big commercial distilleries to micro distillery gems. By the end of the day, I remember really enjoying a dram from Noah's Mill. I had never tried it before. I ended up buying a bottle before returning home, questioning if it was actually good, or if everything was good at that point. Fortunately, I still thoroughly enjoy it. It is no surprise that I remembered it, bottled at 58% alc. it was sure to make an impact.
I can't wait to hear about your experience at your friends whisky tasting. Should be something special!

If you wanted to get indicative prices try google and also refer the online auction prices.
The Brora that you mentioned is probably worth quite a bit, similarly the Ardbeg.
Like many others here, I too have a collection of whisky.

Hello,
I recently purchased a bottle of Woodford Reserve Batch #2 that I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to get my hands on. I am not familiar with the values of whisky since, whisky is something enjoy, not collect. But now, I might want to hold on to this bottle, at least until a special occasion.
What I've learnt about it is that it was produced after Woodford reserve re opened in 1997. Being batch number 2, it was more than likely distilled around that time. It is also a creation developed by Lincoln Henderson, as apposed to today's Woodford reserve signed off by Chris Morris.
What I am trying to determine is the value of the bottle. I have not yet decided how I want to treat it. I do have a great appreciation for whisky and it's presence might bring me comfort in my cabinet, mint as it is now. But I also realize that I am in possession of something more than likely very rare at this time and I am curious of what kind of price tag it might bring in. Even still, if the price tag is high enough I still might want to hold on. But I am reaching out to more knowledgeable collectors to help me understand the value of rarity.
