I had the fortunate opportunity to try both the limited 18yr rye and 36yr old bourbon releases from Redemption. After 36 years only 6% of the original contents remained, just enough to fill 18 bottles. You might be thinking that 36 year old bourbon is a gimmick. You might be thinking that 36 years in new chared oak would destroy any flavor profile that remains in this bourbon. You are right. What i partook of tonight was quite simply wood extract. Maybe wood bitters. Excellent notes of railroad ties, telephone poles, and maybe staves constucted from the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. All that said the nose was okay. The rest was extremely drying and tanic. Water only made my glass fuller, so i gave up on that fairly quick. The rye is very good, but not the best I've ever had either. I still feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to try these one of a kind bottles and i also had quite a few other great drams tonight. Pretty amazing experience even if i need to brush my teeth 3 times to get the wood off my palate.
