My friend is coming into town to visit, and we had discussed in the past sitting down some night and having a session. What are some whiskies I should look into that make a good session whisky?

Thanks, OCeallaigh

Is there a particular direction you want to go? Scotch, American, World, Irish, Blends...or are you looking for a mix?

@Zigman Good question. I could take anything. I mean, ANY Irish whiskey could work for this. But I guess I'm looking for American or Scotch. My retailers don't have much other world whiskies.

If it is available in your area of the world and you want to have fun with it I suggest you sit down with a Rye Whiskey(s). Some of my favorites are (RI)1, Russel's Reserve or Rittenhouse Straight Rye. Its a classic and original spirit that is really making a comeback here in the U.S., and something I have always enjoyed.

If Rye's are not readily available some Bourbons you may like to try are Eagle Rare,Old Evan Williams Single Barrel 1998, Elijah Craige Single Barrel or Bulleit Bourbon.

As far as Irish, I really like a Tyrconnell SM...an awesome SM Irish whisky at a totally reasonable price...hope this helps.

Hi @OCeallaigh. Session beer drinking usually implies that you are having a lot of them, and so you want something easy-drinking and lower in alcohol. But what does session mean for whisky? You may not want to imbibe more than 3 or 4 drinks, and toward the end the appreciation for the whisky tends to drop off (along with the drinker). But i suppose for an entry-level session you would want a mild, low alcohol and easy-drinking whisky, such as Black Bush, Redbreast, Michael Collins, Bunnahbhain 12 (40%), Auchentoshen 12 (40%), Basil Haden's bourbon (40%), Macallan Sherry Cask 12, Highland Park 12, Jamesons 12, Johnnie Walker Green, Glenfarclas 12, Canadian Club Sherry Cask, or even a blend.

But if you want to make your session more fun, interesting and rewarding, try picking up several different bottles (you can sometimes find smaller bottles, or even 50ml sizes), and have fun sampling sips (not full pours) of each of them. Good luck ... and let us know how it went !

@OCeallaigh, I echo @AboutChoice on variety: I would suggest to my friends that they try my 25 whisk(e)y sampling tour. You drink a little bit of each and If you like something, you try some more of that.

I'm sure you will get some good recommendations here @OCeallaigh

We'd like to add a little note to say: have fun but please drink responsibly - whisky is something to be savoured.

And remember it is unwise to regularly exceed the recommended daily units. If from time to time you do consume more, make sure you eat a good meal before hand and drink plenty of water.

That is all.
