I have Connosr member Victor to thank for this recommendation, (from an Arran review where I stated I liked dry whiskies).
So - I've never ventured into Rye whisky territory before but I'm all for trying new and different things.
Nose - I get spicy vanilla. Slightly woody; very big and powerful but not nasal burning. Nice!
Palate - starts off slightly creamy but then a massive wallop of vanilla. Bit of caramel too. Incredibly spicy with a power that matches the nose...and then some! And yep, it is dry and fairly astringent.
Finish - long, dry, lasting. Slightly prickly.
This is definitely not what I would call smooth. Instead it is a massive hit of flavour that lets you know you're drinking a powerful whiskey. It's in your face making you take notice. If you want a contrast to a subtle, aged single malt then this is it. Different to what I'm used to but great stuff! I think I might be looking over the Atlantic for more American and Canadian whiskies from now.
Have very little experience with ryes (only tasted it 3,4 times) this summons even more eagerness to take a plunge. Thanx for a very satisfying review!
