My niece is over for dinner tonight. She's not into peat, and she seems to like bourbon cask matured stuff. She has enjoyed Amrut CS before, so tonight she is enjoying some of the single cask (bourbon) at 60%. MMM. Fantastic. (I'm enjoying some too.

Watching Dave Chapelle's Netflix special Equanimity while having some Highwood Ninety. I don't know if it's the bottle or just my mood tonight, but I'm really not feeling this pour. It tastes kind of... bland. Maybe it's because I've been having some pretty punchy stuff lately, like Lot No. 40 CS and Dillon's Rye CS. I'll give it another go in a day or two, but right now I'm thinking of returning what's left of this pour to the bottle and getting me some Eagle Rare instead.

I’m still on the no-booze train as this cold won’t leave me alone, so I’m trying to smoke it out with some Lapsang Souchong tea. It’s not exactly Ardbeg smoke, but it’s going to have to do.

@Nelom I never pour back into the bottle... I have a 30 cc sample bottle (courtesy master of malt) that I dump unwanted or unfinished pours into. I still have some Old scout in there from mid December.

@Nozinan Probably a good policy. I ended up finishing my pour in the end, but to be honest I'm not quite sure why. I never did fully appreciate it as much as I know that bottle deserves.

@Nozinan Brown. Newly opened. Maybe it needs some air.

@Nelom Maybe. I've enjoyed every pour from every burgundy label bottle I've had, whether new or old.

I'd probably like the white label too, as long as I wasn't comparing it to the other one.

It was probably you then.... stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

@Nelom, as much as @Nozinan is jokingly suggesting that the whisky is okay, I agree with him. I've had more than a few pours of whisky, Highwood Ninety 20 YO included, that didn't seem right at the time. When I revisited them at a later date their brilliance again shown through. Some days our pallet isn't right for a taste of whisky.

@paddockjudge and I would go further (because unlike you I don't need a pallet to hold my whisky, I use a cabinet) and say that our palates can vary on a day to day basis. stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

@Nozinan, to be frank I need at least two, possibly three pallets to hold all of my containerized whisky.

My cold finally gave up, so I’m easing into the last of my Wild Turkey 101. I will definitely buy this one again. Budget-friendly and very easy sipping.

Chased Glenlivet 18yo with Glendronach 21yo. I had to celebrate my sons 8th birthday somehow.

Watching the Australian Open with a scotch-and-soda made from 1970s Something Special (which is likely what it was made for).

I'm cutting back lately, but over the weekend I had Ardbeg Ten, Dark Cove CR, Corryvreckan, Laphroaig 10 CS, and PC7.

Hard to pick a winner among that lineup. All al little different, all very good!

-10 degrees.

It's snowing.

I've shovelled 3 times and will have a lot dumped back on my driveway by morning.

And I had my wife's spring rolls for supper....with fish sauce.

Only one Scotch can handle the job tonight...Laavulin 12. I'm cracking the 2013 sample courtesy of @Robert99 and will compare it to my opened 2015.

@talexander - sounds rather nice! I quite like the odd cocktail. May have to PM you for some recipes - seems like you know our way round a shaker! (i'm referring to the MH at the top of this page)

A Wild Turkey 101. Just a small one; may have a Jura Superstition after if the mood takes me. I need warming up tonight!

Long week! Unfortunately the Laimrig is now all gone. It’s good stuff. Would definitely recommend. Great Islay dram with cocoa on the palate that I found was amplified with a cigar.

As I continue on my quest to finish my heels, I dug out a decanted remnant of my A'Bunadh 46, which I opened in April 2015 (to commemorate turning 46), and which it appears I last poured in March 2017. 1-2 more drams of this left.

Interestingly, I rated this as low average of the 11 batches I've tried, but tonight, neat, it was overpowering but good. A little water tamed it nicely.

Tonight I decided to experiment with a 60/40 blend of Longrow Red 13yr Malbec/Springbank 9yr Gaja Barolo ..better than either stand alone.

Last night I was sipping some McClelland Islay and chatting with my wife and in-laws...Since I try to be a good host, I bought a bottle of Wiser's Triple Barrel Rye earlier. It was on sale, I didn't have any mixer whisky on hand, and quite a few folks I know drink rye and coke or rye and ginger. Just for fun, I rinsed my glass and decided to try a small pour of Triple Barrel neat. I was surprised at how good it is. I believe I read somewhere that this is simply a re-branding of the Double Still rye, but I had forgotten how complex this whisky is. I'm reminded a bit of Springbank 10. It doesn't taste like Springbank, but it has sweet, spicy, and sour notes much like the much-vaunted Campbeltown malt. All for under $30.
