In our house we have what's called 'Wine Down Wednesdays'. It's a play on words for 'Wind Down Wednesdays'. When I used to be so very into wines it was fun to call it Wine Down Wednesdays, Nowadays I reach for a scotch or bourbon on our Wednedays. Tonight's Wine Down Wednesday I reached for my A'bunadh (batch #40). I have not had a dram of this in months. Wow...I forgot how A'bunadh is such an amazing pour. I wanted another dram of this delicious sherry fruit cake but want to make my bottle last since its already at the half way mark so I'm finishing off the 50ml bottle of Balvenie Doublewood 12 I opened the other night. What a nice night.

CENTURY RESERVE 15TO25 (yr old) 100% corn whisky by Highwood Distillers while watching Woods and McIlroy in Abu Dhabi. This is definitely a benchmark whisky.

Tonight I'm going to kick back with a Bowmore Enigma, a 12 Year Old travel retail expression that was bought for me last year, and that I only got around to opening over Christmas. I only tasted my first Bowmore last September and have tried some cracking drams since. My blogpost on this expresssion can be found here: whisky-discovery.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/…

@chrisbator Sounds awesome!

I'm indulging in a dram of Alberta Premium Dark Horse. A very interesting newer expression by Alberta Distillers; I find myself coming back to this one a lot lately.

Wiser's Red Letter 2007, 150th Anniversary Edition. Non-chill filtered, 45% abv, no color - nothing added - nothing removed; only grain, water, yeast, and oak. @Victor's review has stimulated my appetite for this classic expression. A very nice drink of top shelf Canadian whisky. The bottle (#4443) has been open for more than two years. It is impressive, yet does not measure up to its more brilliant brother (bottle #2640 rated 94; 98 Canadian Category). Regardless, @Victor tagged it a 90. I 'll be pouring two next time and revisiting a sibling rivalry. The 160th anniversary is only four years away. Cheers!

Got home from work with a bottle of Johnny Walker Double Black in hand. Seems my 10 yr. Cask Strength Laphroaig and I are still trying to work things out. Took a shower with "Johnny ", now we're going to bed. Smells great, really rich for the blend that it is. Just can't seem to get all fired up for the flavor. We'll take a 'walk' tomorrow and see what happens.

Skipped the bourbon tonight and went for a healthy pour of 'Laddie 10. An above average scotch and the price is right too. For a young whisky, everything comes together nicely.

@Victor I've heard some interesting things about Corsair! You're a fan?

@Jonhelmkamp, Corsair does some daring innovation and experimentation. I haven't tried everything of theirs, but I like several of their products very much, such as Wry Moon, the Pumpkin Spice whiskey, and especially this Quinoa Whiskey. Frankly I am amazed by how good this Quinoa Whiskey is. Who'd a thunk it? It is spicy, but has a distinctive spiciness different from the spiciness from rye, wheat, or oak. This is the sort of thing that is basic to whiskey innovation: finding a new "rye", that is, a new grain with a lot of flavour to make a whole new class of whiskey. I have been thinking about Quinoa whiskey for a long time myself, but didn't know anybody was going forward with it. Quinoa is a seed, but is it a true grain? I don't know and didn't think so...but I am not an expert in defining what makes a grain.

Yes I am a fan of Corsair and what Connosr member Derek Bell is doing. (Though I am not a big fan of their Rasputin hops whiskey. Always interesting, but I won't be drinking it much.)

Drinking a mid afternoon dram of McClelland's Islay Single Malt, and I'm very impressed. Jim Murray was off his rocker rating it 88, but I'd rate it a strong 75, and for $35 that's a win in my books.

Big lineup tonight. Starting with 2 Compass Box whiskies: Oak Cross and Flaming Heart. Then moving on to Laphroaig Triple Wood, Ardbeg Alligator, and Ardbeg Galileo.

@Onibubba how do you feel about the triple wood? Had it at a laphroaig tasting once but I paid more attention to some of the other whiskies.

Onibubba replied

@Volks I like it a lot. It costs the same as the QC where I live. I find it somewhat softer (like the 18) than other Laphroaigs. I would maybe compare it to Ardbeg's Alligator and Beist. Somewhat softer than other very aggressive whiskies in their respective line ups.
