Jim Beam Black. My last bottle of this I bought in the US and the export version is really not up to the same standard. There's a very faint play doh (!) note on the nose and palate that is bugging me on some sips. Still very serviceable and very, very, very smooth. No burnt or acrid character in this bourbon.

@paddockjudge The new lot 40 or the old, mythical lot 40 ? I've been debating on a liquor run to NB in the following weeks and the new bottling of lot 40 has caught my eye.

For my birthday, my lovely wife took me to my favorite steak restaurant which recently added Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings to their single malt offerings. They currently have 8 different bottles. Before dinner, I had a 9 year Glenmorangie 125.51 (Perfumed Sweetness and Zesty Fruits), then a 21 year Bladnoch 50.49 (Pudding in a Glass). After dinner, a 15 year Caol Ila 53.160 (Rennies by a Smoky Bonfire). Back home, finishing the night with a 25 year Port Ellen (The Old Malt Cak bottling).

@A'bunadhman -Thanks for the birthday wishes! We had a great time. I won't have to wait until her birthday to reciprocate... valentine's day is only a few days away and then we have our anniversary next month. :-) I have no problem spoiling her, she's worth it. Not to mention she obviously does a great job spoiling me! I'm truly blessed.

Following the Talisker DE, fininshing the night with a 5 year Kilchoman (SMWS 129.1).

@Frank1 - the new Lot No. 40. Buy two and open both of 'em, seriously. I sampled it intermittently over a three month period and it didn't bloom until the bottom 1/4 of the bottle - 3 months.

@26goingon62 how does it compare to the 12? It is on my "possible" purchase list and I'm not that familiar with Speysides.

@26goingon62
26goingon62 replied

@tjb the 18 IMO is a lot better due to how smoother it is and the 12 has got a taste of pear, a good dram.

@talexander I just realised I've been reviewing the 18 when I was drinking the 15!!! What I meant to say was the 12 is smooth and fruity (pear) the 15 is smoother still and really creamy and sweet a nice dram. But both not really my kind of whisky.
