Tonight was an awesome night to say the least! Started the night with Johnnie Walker Blue (my first time tasting it, nice but overrated imo) then Glen Grant 1949 58 yr old from Gordon & Macphail and then Octomore Orpheus 2.2. A very lovely evening and I'm definitely going to be heading back to the Glen Grant 1949 to explore a bit more!

If I could be allowed to indulge your patience (and stretch this thread discussion back to the afternoon/evening of March 15th)...one week ago, I was very fortunate to attend a 'mega-tasting' with several other Connosr members. Everyone (plus one not in attendance) contributed some excellent bottles/samples. In order, until the time I left many hours later, we tried:

  • Grand Old Parr 12
  • Hazelburn 8
  • (Tasmanian Distillery) Sullivan's Cove Double Cask
  • Duncan Taylor Dimensions Glenlossie 11 (2000 - 2011) @ 46%
  • Writer's Tears

  • Redbreast 12

  • Redbreast 12 CS

  • Tomatin 15 Tempranillo Cask finish @ 52%
  • Arran Robert Burns Single Malt
  • Glenlivet 21 Archive

  • Eagle Rare 17 (2010)

  • Sazerac 18 (2011)

  • William Larue Weller (2011, iirc)
  • George T. Stagg (2011)
  • Dillon's White Rye, Batch 1 (from a new distillery in Ontario)

  • Willet Soppressata

  • Yamazaki 18

  • Glenmorangie 18
  • Glen Garioch 25 CS, Batch 11
  • Talisker 57N

  • Dun Bheagan Islay 8 (2002)

  • Lagavulin Distiller's Edition (1989-2005)

  • Longrow CV
  • Smokehead
  • SMWS 127.26 'Student Party Aftermath', Port Charlotte 9 (2002-2011, iirc)

  • Port Charlotte An Turas Mor

  • Connemara Turf Mor

  • Corsair Quinoa
  • Arran Sherry Cask (for the LCBO, iirc)
  • Pike Creek NAS

  • Pike Creek 10

  • Lot 40 Copper Pot Still Canadian Whisky

  • Jefferson's Presidential Select 18, Batch 16
  • more????

An excellent and very enjoyable session both for the bottles tried and, most importantly, the people who were able to try them!

Sullivans cove double cask. First dram from a freshly opened bottle. Initially quite poor. Opened up in the glass after some time but still... im hoping the bottle improves dramatically with some air.

@Chookster...the SCDC on my tasting list was also a newly opened bottle. I noted some rich fruit notes, orange zest, and a healthy (though not overpowering) dose of cinnamon. I will revisit the bottle again in the near-ish future and see how it has changed. Keep us posted on how your bottle develops.

Dalwhinnie 15; it has been a while since I had a dram, and it is much as I remembered. Gentle, floral, and pretty average overall.

Thanks @bwmccoy! It was a wonderful time, made better by the friends who were able to be there to enjoy the various drams (I don't believe anybody had all of the ones that were on the list...pacing is key).

I see that you are an SMWS member. The Port Charlotte SMWS sample that was poured was one of (if not THE) the big winners on the day. The bottle title does not do it justice...some salty and smoked meat/peat notes that just were fantastic. If a bottle or sample is still available to you through SMWS, it is well worth getting (I am drooling, just thinking about it!).

@Pudge72 - Thanks! I will keep my open for that one. I'm a huge Port Charlotte fan and the one I previously had from SMWS was excellent as well. 127.13 "Garry the tank commander". Sadly, that one is gone, but I just cracked open a PC8 Friday night and it met, if not exceeded, my expectations. Excellent stuff!

Just brought a bottle of glenfarclas 105, considering it stands at 60% alc it's freakishly smooth. Very nice too. It's coming into the cold season where I live and a good sherry bomb is just what I needed.

Old Forester Signature - opened eight weeks ago.

The bottom half of this bottle is brilliant! Warm butter with cinnamon, vanilla - rising bread dough - delicious with a sweet, clean, and dry finish. This particular expression is 100 proof and arrives all decked-out with a crème brulee colored bow (tie) ... I wonder if Trevor tied that on?

I visited a friend tonight who had some barrel samples of things we'll be tasting as a group next month in KY. So, it was a full night of whiskey. I brought along some selections to try afterwards that included:

Pendleton 1910 (Canadian Rye) Yamazak 12 and 18 year Hibiki 12 year 1991 Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

We finished off the night with a 1991 vintage Fonseca Port and a couple cigars. Think it's time for bed now......
