@OdysseusUnbound Yeah, true enough. Joey should have gone and Edwin should have stayed. We'd better get back to talking about whisky here, it's a far less depressing subject. Cheers.

@paddockjudge, now you are just taunting @Nozinan. You know, if you look at that logo upside down it looks a lot like a 'W'.

@OdysseusUnbound Well they were worth watching over the last 2 years (not this year). Injuries and age will get every team.

They will be fun to watch again when Vlad jr and Bo Bichette arrive. You get to see Rafael Devers over the next 15 years assault the record book in Boston.

@Astroke, I'm all over this game with the expanded rosters starting today...getting a look at the auditions. Top of 13th now and it remains scoreless. Enjoying a pour of Rock Hill Farms. tumbler_glass

@paddockjudge I had hoped they would call up Danny Jansen so it would have been from A/AA/AAA/MLB but he is not on the 40 man roster so he may not get the call. Incredible year he has had.

@Astroke, players like him deserve to get a call-up and earn the major league minimum salary of $3,000/game instead of 3 grand per month riding on buses.

Just finished a day-long move from hell. Still have a lot at the old place but all the big stuff is here.

Managed to get one of my two monitors hooked up to my computer, so at least I have access to Connosr (and work).

Sadly, all of my whisky that is in Toronto is in the old house, and won't be moved until tomorrow.

Sunday, when I move it over with the help of a friend, I'll sit and relax (and celebrate Anniversary #11), and I hope to open a good 12 YO Scotch (I was 12 the first time I moved into this house).

I an NOT drinking two fantastic whiskies I saw behind the bar at this wedding last night, which was peopled almost 100% by AA types and came this close to having abstinence written into the wedding vows: Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength and Lagavulin 12. I wasn't really feeling like a drink—or violating the norms or this group, for that matter—but dang! When do you ever see those behind a bar? I didn't even bother to see which versions they were.

This was at some golf club or lake resort or what-have-you in NE Wisconsin.

I once ordered a legendary Batch 28 A'Bunadh at a fancy cricket and skating club and what came out of the bottle was as fake as a Rolox. So you may have missed nothing.

So I'm on call today and yesterday my NEAT glasses arrived. a lot smaller than I expected and quite nice looking. Anyway, I washed one and am really keen to see what it does to my whisky, but alas I'll have to wait until the earliest tomorrow night.

Looking at my open cabinet, and wondering what would be best for a neat experience...

@Nozinan, cute little spittoons, aren't they?

Nozinan replied

@Victor too small for spittoons.

I know you're not a fan of the glasses but isn't it important to get as many experiences as possible? If the glass changes the experience so much, that doubles the number of choices I have in my cabinet...

@Nozinan, I am very much a fan of getting the experience of using the NEAT glasses. I have one, you now.

When you try to drink from them you might start calling them the "not-so-neat" glasses.

@Victor I'm getting really hyped up about it. I plan to review the glassware thread today, so I can choose the right thing to try.

@Nozinan, that's easy. The greatest contrast will be found by trying the stuff with the most intensity and the stuff with the greatest subtlety. 60+% ABV whisk(e)y of all genres, and anything where you find a lot of complexity.

@Victor So maybe Amrut Peated CS, and maybe Wiser's dissertation...

Dissertation is a good choice. Amrut Peated CS would be OK, but that's really just peat/smoke and malt. I think you'd do better with the combined strength and complexity of A'bunadh or Talisker 57 North. Handy or William Larue Weller would be great choices. Uigeadail would make a good comparison too, for relative strength and range of flavours available from the various types of glasses used. And if you tried something like Wiser's De Luxe, which you don't have in your household, you might find that you get no nose at all from the NEAT glass.

@Victor I don't know if I can justify opening a bottle of oogy just for this experiment, but I can try the A'Bunadh, and I was considering re-reviewing my Mortlach 13 YO. I force some interesting experiments.

Victor replied

@Nozinan, naaaaahhhh, heavy peat and smoke holds up well... unless you have 10 bottles of them already open, there's never any need not to open up a bottle of heavily peated Islay whisky. Uigeadail does not need to wait for a special occasion. It is a drink for all days and every day. Peaty/smokey/briney Islay products will not crap out on you with a little air exposure the way a meek Speyside whisky will. Sure, you will lose smoke in the nose after you open them, but you will have that experience no matter when you open them.

@Victor True. But the difficulty is sourcing affordable Uigeadail, and having ample supply in my bunker. I've been thinking of getting an extra in December in Calgary, but I have to see what my inventory is. I'm trying hard not to increase year over year.

I just saw a Kilkerran WIP #7 Bourbon cask strength at a local bottle shop for $120NZD (about $86USD, $108CAD). I'm very tempted. It's a once in a life time opportunity, and I love my Springbank 12 CS (even though they're very different beasts), but with my limited disposable funds there are other bottles that are high on my list to buy for less than this one. Will I regret this?

@Hewie , BUY THAT KILKERRAN.

The price is good. The whisky's great. And from all appearances, they're not going to make its clone again anytime soon.

BUY THAT KILKERRAN.

@Hewie A few more arguments: which bottle would complement your cabinet better? Is there a distillery you have never tasted among those bottles? Which bottle stand alone by its uniqueness? Which one is close to your favorite style of whisky? Which one has the better review?

@MadSingleMalt

@Hewie , since you mentioned the Springbank 12 CS, I should give you my opinion that that's not the best "comp" to the Kilkerran you're looking at. The Kilkerran WIP #7 Bourbon CS is more like the Springbank 10 on steroids. It's zippy, bright, a little earthy & salty, and a little rough in a good way.

It's not fat, round, or "dark," like the Springbank 12 CS.
