Have been looking for a good while here in Vancouver and its been Mission Impossible. There is a bar near to where I live that has it in stock for now but going there for a dram or two now and again is an expensive habit! Good Luck with your search as Talisker 18 is at the top of my wish- list so I can appreciate your wanting to get hold of it.

I sympathize guys, I am also in BC and would love to get my hands on a Talisker 18. You could probably expect it to cost at least $150 and possibly up to $250. The BC Liquor Stores web site lists 138 single malts. Kensington Wine Market in Calgary lists 263. They have regular and affordable tastings and are always bringing in new product. Their prices, on average, are 30% less than ours. Eg: Hp18, BC price $150, Calgary price $101. The only recent additions to the BC listings are 6 old Macallans that run from $1745 to $8000 per bottle. How ridiculous is that when there are so many others available that us regular people would enjoy, could afford and would buy. I still think a cube van and a trip to Alberta is the best option. Or maybe I'll sell up and move to Islay and live happily ever after. Cheers.

Thanks...with some furthering diging it appears that Talisker 18 is a rare item world wide. Some talk that it has been discontinued by the distillery and thus in short suppply everywhere??

I've heard that they are phasing it out as well. At the moment though, you can still find it in most shops in Europe.

@BlueNote, sing it brother. The situation in ON and QC is sadly similar.

@hawkscotch (great name!), have you tried looking over your southern border? You can skip Washington State, as they don't carry it, but my last trip Portland turned up a few gems. Perhaps you might be able to find Talisker there, too.

Thanks dbk...I was just in Vegas but alas only the 10yr old in the duty free. The Albertans are proably hoarding it all!

About a year ago I came across a bottle of Talisker 18yr for $59 USD. I thought it was priced incorrectly, so I threw my money down and ran out of the store with it. Turns out it was priced correctly, but I've never seen another bottle of it at any price anywhere in Atlanta.

Has anyone tried the Talisker Ditiller's Edition? It is available here in BC and the reviews I've seen are pretty good.

@hawkscotch Try this website ---> www.lfw.co.uk . Look at their shipping statement as they explain how they do ship to Canada and provide tips on how to get your shipment thru. Looks like it's a 75% success rate / crap shoot. Good luck.

@HP12 Now that is tempting. Thanks for the info. Hawkscotch and Bluenote let me know if you ever decide to go for it and how it works out . I will do the same.

@HP12. I just took a look at that website. Unbelievable..a candy store. It's almost worth taking a chance on the shipping just to get hold of a couple of those beauties that we are unlikely to ever see here.

Here's another question. If you go to the UK, and bring back a few bottles over and above the regular duty free allowance, what kind of taxes and duty does Customs nail you with? Or do they simply confiscate the excess? I'm going over in October and I would dearly love to do some whisky shopping.

@BlueNote, the legal limit on what you can bring back over the Canadian border is rather large—they won't confiscate any amount any "normal" person (or whisky anorak) brings back, so long as you declare it at the border. That said, they will zing you with duty, and it depends on which province you enter. Why? Because Canada Customs collects for the province of entry, and so marks up as a function of this. Federal duty on whisky is in fact quite low—it's the provincial markup that's so ridiculous.

You can expect a markup of about 70% or more in Ontario for whisky, and apparently it's well over 100% in BC (or so I'm told), whereas it is much, much lower in Alberta. If you plan to bring back more than your duty-free allowance (1.14 litres of whisky per person), you might want to make sure you land in AB and go through customs there first...

I'm not sure if they ship to Canada. Worth asking. I order from these guys all the time. Just call them on the phone. Real nice guys.

Anyone found any sources explaining the reasoning for the discontinuation? Stuff is damn good. Hope they have plans to fill it's void in the lineup with something at least equally good.

I grabbed a bottle last year when I found it for the same price as the 10. Still have a little more than half a bottle as I haven't really touched it since I noticed it wasn't being restocked anywhere. This seems to confirm it's not just my area.

@BlueNote re: Distiller's Edition: I just received the Talisker gift pack. It includes the 10 yo, the Distiller's Edition, and the 57 degrees North. Here in Ontario, this is the only way to get any Talisker other than the 10 yo. Unfortunately the LCBO has now discontinued the gift pack as well, so there is only limited stock in London and Kitchener/Waterloo. I will hopefully be cracking open the DE in the near future and will eventually post a review.

I have seen them at a couple of places in Edmonton, AB. The Liquor Depots have them behind glass cases.

i just bought a bottle of this beauty yesterday. i had a glass at a bar about a year ago and had been looking for it since. my local liquor store found a bottle in their stock room and i snatched it up. they knew i was looking for it so they actually called me. yesterday i found 2 more bottles at another store. i'm not sure if they just halted production for a while or if they actually discontinued it. apparently connecticut is the place to find it. quite a trek from vancouver though i'd say.

@hawkscotch i got to the bottom of why this is so hard to find. they literally keep it locked in a vault and release very limited quantities at a time. the owner of the liquor store i frequent looked into it for me. crazy stuff. if i had a vault, i'd keep it in there too. :)

@hawkscotch
hawkscotch replied

@mmscotch...it is very strange indeed. Me thinks they lost the combination to the vault! It's too bad as it is such a nice scotch. For me the 10yr just isn't a suitable replacement. Oh well...I will continue to search..

I picked up a bottle at a local wine shop for usd$85. They have only 2 cases left. Debating whether or not to pick up a case. I haven't really looked for this but mission liquor and K&L do not have the 18 yr.

If anybody is still looking for Talisker 18 in North America, Party Source in Kentucky has bottles for US$60...and no, that is NOT a typo, my dad and his wife were able to pick up a bottle for me this past weekend when they were visiting her family...for those in Southern Ontario...it's a drive of less than nine hours!! :)

IMO the best Talisker expression is the 57 North. Less agressive than the 10yo, more active than the 18yo, and "purer" Talisker than the DE.
