The Glenrothes Select Reserve

Am I the only one who was completely put off by this expression from The Glenrothes? I hear from a lot of people that they really like this particular dram, but ever since I popped the cork on this one, I couldn't stand it. I got a distinct smell of what seemed to be tequila? ( I gag at the mere smell of tequila after a bad experience) Maybe just a bad batch? Anyone else have a similar experience with Select Reserve?

(Sorry, accidently pushed the button too soon) My girlfriend doesn't like ketchup after some bad experiences during a student initiation. Can you blaim ketchup for that? I think your aversion towards tequila might be in the same league: it doesn't mean other people can't like it of course. On the other hand, it's true that some batches of Glenrothes SR contained a few unfresh casks in my opinion. But not all batches and certainly not other expressions of Glenrothes.

@WhiskyNotes I've tried a couple of the Vintages ( 1991 / 1994) and really enjoyed them. The Select Reserve just really didn't do it for me. I just wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience with it.

@malthound Have you tried letting the whisky breath in the glass for a little while? I've come across a similar smell before with other whiskies and found that it went after ten of fifteen minutes resting.

I didn't encounter it with this whisky mind you.

@Piero I'll definately let it sit and breathe a little longer than I would normally. Thanks for your suggestion. I do really want to find a way to enjoy this whisky

I am a Glenrothes fan, but this is not one of their more spectacular expressions. Letting it breathe for a while certainly helps. You wouldn't be the first to mention Tequila. Personally, I like Tequila, but not in my Scotch. :)

I have not experienced that with the Select Reserve. My guess bad batch.

Interesting--I've only had happy experiences with the Glen Rothes. I think I have a bottle of the Special Reserve in my collection... I'll look and if I do I'll give it a whirl and report back!

Cheers,

I had a similar experience with my latest bottle. There was a very strong tequila smell after uncorking. I usually enjoy this brand and this particular whiskey, but my current bottle is nowhere near the taste I have have enjoyed with this whiskey in the past. Very disappointed .

@malthound I did review this whisky and was put off so much I didn't even finish the bottle. However that said Glenrothes Distillery should not get a bad rap form my example. I would still try other expressions from this distillery. After all it's not like the Select Reserve was a Ford Pinto.... oh wait that's right to me it was and all other Fords are good. LOL. Hope this was helpful. :)
