Tochan 21 against Tochan 21

This discussion will certainly interest the Tochan Man !. Me and my drinking buddy did a very interesting tasting matchup. We both received, completely by chance, during Christmas a bottle of Auchentochan 21 years old. Even if it both came from the same store, Quebec's public-owned alcohol stores (SAQ), it was a different bottling. Mine was the old Tochan bottling, while my friend received the new bottling. Long story short, we decided to do a comparison tasting, which happened this weekend.

We anticipated slight differences, but is happened to be two completely different malts. The old bottling showed grassy notes on the nose initially that developed into a lots of apples with hints of maple syrup after it took some air. The new bottling was more on caramel, wet grass and leather. The mouth was really more gentle with the old bottling showing the apples and maple syrup that was present on the nose and developing with grassy notes in a lengthy final. You could really feel the triple distillation and it was more characteristic of the Tochan distillery in my sense. The new bottling was more robust and rude with a final lasting less longer. Blind tasting them, I would have say that it was two completely different distilleries... and yet, it was the same expression of the same distillery.

Very interesting indeed. Are you a fan of comparative whisky tastings ? The next one we have on the stack is two Aberlour A'Bunah... Batch 27 vs Batch 29 !! It will be fun !

@Kutter, this is indeed a very interesting excercise and thank you for sharing it (although you mean Toshan instead of Tochan, of course :-)). I cannot add much more, as I've not opened my old bottle of 21 Year Old (distilled in 1973, bottled in 1994), so I have nothing to compare the new 21 YO against (which I tased at the distillery last September).

I'm very much into comparing whisky, sure. Looking forward to your notes on the A'bunadh (I have batch 24).

@markjedi1, yes, TOSHAN it is. Sorry for misspelling your "raison de vivre" ;o) Do you know how I can find the bottling year of my toshan 21 ?

@Kutter, these sorts of differences between batches/bottles do occur. I have for some time been planning to do a review of the HUGE differences between 2 bottles of Ardbeg Uigeadail which I own, which were bought and opened within just a few months difference in time from one another.
