I have had the good fortune of trying several well-aged Tomintoul. This is my 7th that is 40 years or older. And all of them were excellent! So the expectations for this Old Malt Cask are pretty high indeed. It was distilled in 1971, year of birth of my buddy Manny – who offered me the sample.

OMG! I have only just poured it and already I am catapulted to a banana plantation. That is immediately followed by overripe pears, some pineapple and lots of vanilla. Deliciously fruity, wonderfully sweet. After two minutes I also get some lemon juice. Very fresh and summer!

Okay… this could have done with a little more body. It is surprisingly soft. But again those lovely notes of quasi-tropical fruit with lots of citrus in the front. Some pepper and soft notes of furniture polish. It works like a charm. Midpalate a slightly bitter note from the oak appears, taking care of a good balance.

The finish is it’s forte. Deliciously long, bittersweet with enough spices to make it linger.

Again an excellent Tomintoul, but unfortunately completely gone. Thanks, Manny!
