@nikkaman Well, I added it to my cabinet with a photo, but it's not yet in the main list. It is indeed a rather nice one - thanks for reminding me I had a bottle. I also need to get round to tasting and writing up the Pure Malt black, white and red that I have sitting in the cupboard...

Has anyone had anCnoc Highland Single Malt. I hear really good things about it, but it appears pretty rare. I was wondering if it was worth hunting down.

Thanks, Chris

@OCeallaigh, if you're referring to the 12 year-old expression, my friends and I just went through a bottle last week. I think it's a wonderful whisky: light, a bit sweet, complex, and a great value. It was very easy to find in Alberta—I visited six stores, including some very basic ones, and found it promptly displayed each time—but I don't know how easy it will be to find it elsewhere.

Man, just when I decide to get back into it and hone my nosing skills, ragweed allergies kick in. Going to start comparing two bottles a night. Last night was Glenmo Nector d'or vs Sonnalta PX. Still not sure enough of myself to make a worthwhile comparison, but getting there.

I took along some bottles to a friends place the other week for a tasting session. A Historic Scotland bottling of a 24yo Dallas Dhu cask #3739 1982 and a 12yo Balvenie Double Wood among some others. My friend, during the session, shook the Dallas Dhu and it frothed up and stayed frothed for some time. He did the same with other bottles and I noticed how the Ballvenie lost its froth quite quickly. My friend explained the higher the strength of whisky the longer the froth lasts. Thats a new one on me, but it does bare up.

Reviewing a whisky is something not to be undertaken lightly. At least that's my opinion. I got out my bottle of Tamdhu 18yo and poured a glass. Looking through my whisky books I looked for an indication of what I should expect when this drink hits my nose and mouth. Jim Murray blasted it as "bitterly disappointing, literally" and most others seemed to write nonsense. By this time I had taken a sniff and a taste. After 30 minutes of reading reviews I came across what Ronnie Routledge had to say on singlemaltsdirect.com/scotch-whisky/… .

Bang on Ronnie. You see I think, and this is only my opinion, the temperature is very important. Whisky is drunk at body temperature. And I think Ronnie and me had our whisky at the same temp.

SMWS Distillery 127 unleashed on 1/10/2010

SMWS releases 2 casks from new Distillery 127 this Friday - can you guess the distillery, what are your experiences of the make?

Clues? Distillery 127 is actually a highly peated expression of SMWS distillery 23, named after a closed distillery nearby (1829 -1929). Retired mashman, Ruaridh McLeod, aged 85, recalls tasting the original stuff – ‘very, very peaty, but smooth as velvet’. Jim McEwan opted therefore for a trickle distillation, 40ppm whisky, filled at about 70% into good bourbon barrels, to be named after distillery that closed in 1929. There is now a plan to re-open the actual distillery and the owners of distillery 23 have achieved the necessary permissions and acquired the buildings and equipment. These plans are on hold, following the recession, but may be revived when the time is right.

127.1 and 127.3 go onsale Fri 1 Oct, 10am Telephone only: - 0131 555 2929 Available to SMWS Members

Visited a Springbank tasting last night, with the lovely Jenny Karlsson presenting. Had the Hazelburn CV, Springbank CV, Hazelburn 12, Kilkerran Work in Progress II, Springbank Vintage 2000, Springbank 18 and Longrow 10. The Springbank 18 was my favorite. What's yours and why?
