@Victor, I like Legacy....and had suspected for a few years that it would eventually be discontinued. Most comments about Legacy reflect upon the use of Lot No 40 as the flavouring whisky; however, I believe that the double distilled corn whisky is equally impressive. The corn is the platform upon which the pot distilled rye is delivered...and don't forget about the dollop of barley, it completes this incredibly delicious single distillery masterpiece....and I can't imagine a gathering without doing the blending exercise, it has become a ritual.

@Nozinan, every time, but only for @Victor, Dr. Don, and @paddockjudge...because we have a deep appreciation for Legacy....and the inventory to support this habit

@paddockjudge You don't NEED lots of Legacy to do the exercise...you make your own, and better (in my not so humble opinion) than the original.

@BlueNote Agreed, and I counsel @paddockjudge to share....

@BlueNote, hahaha, see you there. I'll save you a seat.

@paddockjudge Yeah, I can think of a few others here that might need a bit of a talking to. But, hey, you only get one go round (as far as we know) so what the hell, go big, or go home.

My local specialty store was out of that Springbank 12 Burgundy I'd spotted last time I was there. I almost took a spin on one of their many IBs from a lower-tier distillery (think Tormore, or Mannachmore, and their ilk), but in the end I just walked out empty-handed.
Maybe I'll celebrate with a new shirt or something instead. I feel weird just thinking that.
Buuuuut... I did allow my attention to be drawn to their stock of 1.75 magnums of Peat Monster Cask Strength. That'd be a fun one. @Victor, did I notice you comment on that comically large bottle recently? The search isn't helping me. I thought the standard Peat Monster was a little tame when I tried it a few years ago, but I could see the high ABV fixing that.

@paddockjudge I totally agre with you. If you keep a bottle of Legacy opened for a long time it will loose some of its sweetness and you then realise that it was keeping the Lot 40 in hold and was imparting some of the best low notes. I will add that you can not forget the role of good cask selection. For me Legacy had the best new oak I saw in Canadian whisky.

@paddockjudge I just want to add that, for me, Lot 40 seems to play abigger role in Dissertation than in Legacy. My guess would also be that there is less corn in Dissertation and probably more second fill casks used. Can you compare the two?

@MadSingleMalt, I've seen some variation in both standard Peat Monster and in Peat Monster Reserve. I do like Peat Monster Reserve in its monster-sized bottle, but it is unwieldy to store. Will you like it as much as you like CS Laphroaig or Ardbeg? My guess is "no", but I could be wrong there. The reason? While the peaty/smokey/briney component of Peat Monster Reserve is strong in flavour, it does not have a thickly-bodied style of peaty/smokey/brinyness. I am guessing that that difference will matter to you. So I would say "try before you buy", and I'll bet that if you do that you will say, "It's OK, but I don't want 1.75 L of it."
I was expecting an even more intensely flavoured Peat Monster Reserve than the bottle I got, like the one I had sampled previously. While I do like the one I have, I do not drink it as frequently as I would if it tasted just like the one I sampled first. You too would probably be pretty happy with the first one I sampled, but you may well get one just like the one I have. Good, but the bottle is a pain in the ass and the quantity is rather large.

Great answer, @Victor. Thanks. And I bet you're right: It'd be fun, but I don't need a huge bottle of it. I admit that a big part of the appeal is that jumbo bottle—I have an event in mind that it'd be fun to bring that to, but that's probably not enough fun to justify the big investment.
So... I guess I'm getting a shirt instead. It's like I don't even know myself anymore.

@Robert99, Dissertation is almost all rye and yes, Lot No 40 is the engineer on this runaway train. I prefer Legacy, it has better balance.

@paddockjudge I felt like an idiot for saying the obvious about the rye when,in fact, I was more imterested about the difference in the way they are using cask. I am very impressed by Dissertation by the way it is a rye almost as perfumed as Lot 40 without being too perfumed like Lot 40 is for me. Dissertation has balance for me, but is, in a way, a more feminine whisky. I don't know how the good doctor was able to tame those high notes of the rye and to soften the edges with so little corn. It doesn't have has much low notes as Legacy but the counterpart is that the high notes are more vivid and elegant. With a lot of air Legacy will become more rye oriented but loose balance and I am missing the wood influence. Dissertation brings the rye forward with way more less wood influence, but I am not missing it. On rhe other hand it doesn't taste like a very young rye like a young Willett or an Old Potrero where you almost have new make flavours. Maybe the 12 years is the key to get a vivid rye with a kind of depth without bringing down with the lower notes of the wood of an older rye?

@paddockjudge At some point we'll have to do a H2H of a couple of bottles to compare the lots...

@Robert99 As you said, Dissertation quite obviously uses more rye than Legacy, but when I learned of the grain breakdown in Dissertation, the surprise to me was how much more. Dissertation is 87% rye and based on @paddockjudge's blend it would seem Legacy uses about 48%. That's a crazy ratio difference to me. I love both, but would never have guessed there's almost twice as much rye in Dissertation as in Legacy.

Lucky 13's:
A couple of bottles of the limited edition Longrow 13 Year Old Red that has been matured in South African Malbec wine casks.
A couple of bottles of the limited edition 2003 Hazelburn, a 13 year old that has had Oloroso sherry wood maturation.

@OdysseusUnbound I think there are a fair number of those Wiser's bottles at the Summerhill LCBO.

@talexander Maybe I'll ask the Barrie (Bayfield St) location to get a few in for me through store to store transfer. I'm thinking of tucking at least 3-4 more of each in the whisky bunker, if I can.

I'm hoping to come away with a G&W little trinity and Lot 40 CS (one to open). There will be one coming to me this weekend from Calgary if all goes well.
I'm looking to open one of my Legacy and investigate it the same way I did with Dissertation before I decided to put away a couple. I really like the DIssertation and wondering whether I'll wish I had put away more. But, again, how much can I put away, and for when?

It has finally arrived, my first bottle of William Larue Weller! I bought this bottle like 5 months ago but received it today. Why only one? Because it was the object of a lottery and I was allowed only 1. Only 1, yes my precious... You are mine... My preciouuus...my preci....
