Yes, I fully appreciate the somewhat humorous element to this if anyone has been bored enough to follow my whisky adventure, but the next one I'm buying is a Lagavulin... I know...

Got a small 20cl and I now like it. My palate has betrayed me..

Likely the 16, but also keep eyeing the distillers edition which has had nice comments and reviews...

@RikS I love Laga, but have never been huge on the DE editions. Love the 12 though, and also really like the 8.

@talexander it could be that I'm transitioning, so to speak, from the sweeter to the non-sherried but I actually tend to like the DE. I have both the Talisker and caol ila DE and think they are both quite great. That said, after a week traveling with am uigeadail I was also quite glad to come home to the standard 10.

How would you say that the Lagavulin 16, 12 and 8 compare to each other?

talexander replied

@RikS The 12 and the 8 are not as rich - I don't think the sherry influence is there at all. They are more of a peat-blast - though because the 12 is higher ABV it has tons of complexity. The 8 less so, but hey I still love it! (I know some who are not crazy about the 8 though).

@talexander Is it ok to ask how you come to receive spirits from the SMWS in Ontario? Membership is something I've considered but the issue of not having access to bottlings was an impediment.

@Nozinan My friend and fellow malthead here (BC) is a member and he gets it through a private liquor store (Liberty Wines I think) in Vancouver who are the Vancouver agents. He also gets quite a lot from KWM in Calgary. There should be some sort of similar arrangement in Ontario. When my buddy was in London he went to the SMWS headquarters and had an amazing meal and tasted a load of excellent stuff and had a tour of the vaults. An amazing experience, he said, and well worth the price of membership. None of it is cheap, but you're a long time dead. yum

@BlueNote @Astroke I received an email from Zyn. The delay was cause by an innaccurate inventory. They didn’t have the Longrow anymore. I will not get my bottle but they keep my trust and I manage to be on a priority list for the next arrival of a whisky in demand.

@Robert99 Thanks for that. Good to know they will continue to ship out of province.

@Astroke I already ordered one from them. Do you know if they are fast to process their online sales, I didn't receive any confirmation of shipping.

Astroke replied

@Robert99 I have not ordered from them yet with their new E-Site because of the 13% tax. I have been part of an order with other people but that was the old UPS days. I will use them if the added 13% tax is still a bargain. I would think they will want to create a good customer base in Ontario by shipping quickly. Let us know about the shipping.

@Astroke I still have to check on my credit card, but judging from the bill they didn't charge the 15% Qc tx but only their GST. I hope it will stay that way.

I’ll see if the local Society bar has some available. I am tempted to see how it’s like too but reluctant to open this sole bottle of mine at this stage.

Newly opened Glenfarclas 105. It has been a while since I last visited this 10 YO bottling (from 2014 60% abv). It caught me by surprise. A sharp exit, but the entry is tempered, silky on the palate followed by a flash of heat igniting an explosion of flavour! Sweet and dry. Sharp and clean. Echos of light fruit, honey, and freshly ground pepper.

@paddockjudge I picked up one of the last 10 YO bottles in Toronto, also, apparently in 2014.

I think I would have opened it by now if not for the switch to NAS. Now it's a single, unreplaceable bottle.

Maybe if I'm between A'Bunadh batches...

Yes, yes indeed. I am more of a collector these days, hardly have the time to drink with a 5 month old and running errands. When I do get the time, it’s usually something light like wine or beer.

Thinking about Caol Ila Distiller's Edition. I see @talexander's positive review back in 2015 and a couple more around the same time. Anyone have any thoughts on recent versions?

RikS replied

@BlueNote I have the latest one 2004/2016. I really like it a lot. It was my foray into islay, and opened the door for subsequent appreciations and purchases on Ardbeg 10, Uigeadail, Laga 16, Laga D.E. and Laphroaig (the last being the only one I don't really appreciate).

My main takeaway for the Caol Ila is that it's greatly balanced and the D.E. gives it a comprehensive 'completeness' because of the finish. Typically what happens for me is that I 'get in the mood' of something sweet... and pick out an Aberlour or Quinta Ruban... or something nice and smokey and pick Ledaig or Benromach... or something heavily peated and pick out an Ardbeg or a Laga.... and keep forgetting about the Caol Ila as it isn't 'much of anything extreme'... until I remember that I have it and pour a dram, and every time remind myself of how great and balanced it is and how silly I am for not coming back to it more often.

In short, and a lot more concise than the above ramblings = very nice, I don't think you'll regret it!

Tonight, I'm sampling recent purchases and thinking to do a little side-by-side sipping of The Balvenie 12 double wood, 17 double wood and 14 Caribbean cask.

@RikS, damn, that Balvenie 17 yo Doublewood is delicious! I drank about 250 ml of a friend's bottle one night (HE was pouring, I believe; a very generous host), and have had it from another bottle previously, which was just as good, and probably from the same bottling. I've got a bottle of it myself, but have been putting off opening it for the last couple of years.

@RikS - I bought the same set last year! Are they all at 43% abv? (we usually get the 12 at 40% in the UK)

Really enjoyed the rum cask albeit a tad sweet for my tastes. Didn't see much difference in the 12 and 17 apart form the latter being a bit softer. Certainly didn't inspire me to shell out £80+ on a bottle.

My partner set me up a blind taste of all three. See if someone can do the same for you - good fun relaxed

5 years ago 1Who liked this?

RikS replied

@RianC Yes, just checked and they're all 43%. I like the idea of the blind test - I think I'll do both. One to sample and test them... and then a blind test to see if I'm remaining of the same 'opinions' when blinded :)

I'm in the UK too - Sainsbury has the 17yrs for £72
