In 2007 I bought the 1980 FOL Laphroaig 27yr old Olorosso Cask for £500.00. It was one of only 90 odd bottles and came with a certificate signed by all current members of staff. I bought it with the intention of drinking it, however the value now stops me from opening it to try it - shame really.

190 Euros for a Port Ellen, and 240 Swiss Francs for a 17 yo IB Springbank.

I have some bottles in the $80 - $90 US range in my cabinet. I think I paid about $105 for a bottle of J.W. Gold a couple of years ago, before I was aware that I could spend $105 more wisely. Some bottles in my collection were bargain or sale items -- for instance, I paid $89 for a bottle of HP 18yo at a local store, even though some of the big discount retailers ask as much as $120 for it.
I'm sure someday I'll get around to the more pricey stuff -- as soon as I've gone through all the four- and five-star whiskies in the under-$100 range.

As a present to myself to celebrate my girlfriend and I getting engaged I got a birthyear whisky, the Bruichladdich DNA 2 1977 for £225 last week. Prior to that I hadn't broken the £100 barrier, though I got close at £95 for a Poit Dubh 30yo.

Just blew $250 AUS on a bottle of Thomas H Handy Sazerac Rye which has me drooling!

it has been almost two years now and i must admit that i've exceeded my old maximum MANY times. some were worth every penny to me, others stand as borderline regrets. hard to consider great times with fantastic people and interesting whisky a "regret", though. perhaps i'll just view it as an expensive education, with no need to repeat certain classes....
i still haven't broken that $500 mark, but i certainly came close with my latest addition - a 1965 29y/o signatory clynelish. i haven't opened it yet, so i can't be certain, but i very much doubt i'll regret it. a brora from before brora was brora? talk about an education.....

Wow, over a year since I last saw this thread and as thecyclingyogi has just pointed out, I've now gone way past my last big purchase of $285 14 months ago, now having picked up 2 bottles of $1000 whisky, the 35 yr old Talisker and a 35 yr old Brora. The Talisker was signed by Mark Lochhead, the distillery manager of Talisker!

The most I've ever paid was $150 for an Octomore 4.1. It was worth it, if I ever open it to drink, because I got to taste a sample of it first. Don't know how much it would be worth now, but I would try to find out...when I open it.
I have a Balvenie 15 year old single cask that I bought for less, but the current LCBO price for the same offering (obviously different cask) is now over that. But I guess that doesn't count, because the question wasn't what is your most expensive bottle worth?

$450-ish for Glenfarclas 40 Year. Worth every penny. I haven't opened it yet, but I don't regret paying the scratch for it.

About a year ago, I paid £620 for a single cask release 37yo 1974 from Auchentoshan and I have been saving up to finally be able to add the 50yo 1957 to my collection as well. In fact, I have asked the people at Auchentoshan to put the bottle aside for me. I plan to go pick it up at the distillery next February. I will set me back £3,000, but will be the highlight of the collection.

@markjedi1, now that's what I call a pricey bottle my friend! Be sure to let us know how it is once you've cracked it open ; )

@CanadianNinja I actually tasted it two years ago. Check this out: markdermul.be/toshanman/tasted/…. That's when I decided I wanted a bottle. It took me two years to save up for it.

Sadly I paid over $1500 for a Yamazaki 25 at an auction site. I don't know what the allure was but the moment I set eyes on it I knew I wanted it. They say infatuation has no real logic.
Do I regret it? Not any more.

@rigmorole just tasted and reviewed the Glenfraclas 40. I hope you have a better vintage since the one I had was a little bit of a let down on the palate...

Having said that...i've tried many very expensive whiskies. Recently tried a Glenlivet 38 year old (they said it could be as old as 40-45 years - they weren't sure!), straight from the cask at the distillery. They estimated the bottling at £5000+ per bottle. I even had seconds!

Raised the ceiling back in April: prior is was $120 for a bottle of Scapa 16...it now $197 for a bottle of Highland Park 25, which I picked up while on a business trip to New Brunswick...it was listed in Ontario at $345 at the time, and the price has since increased to $375, so I figure it was a bargain.

300 is the most. Might pull the trigger again on a HP30 if I can talk them down a bit. But a year after my last post on this topic, 200 is still a high bar for me. I find that most of what I most enjoy falls squarely in the 80 - 120 range. Anything over that requires some real research and solid justification.

I decided to push the boat out and get myself a nice bottle. I short listed it down to 3 and finally went for a Laphroaig 15 Year Old 1996 Cask 8512 - Cask Strength Collection (Signatory) £91. I was treating myself and it was the first time I had gone over £60. I ordered from Master if Malt and am a big Laphroaig fan. The MoM review was not brilliant but I was un deterred although I also bought a 3cl sample of it just in case and wanted to return it.
As it turned out it was pretty horrible so I asked MoM who were brilliant. I boxed it up carefully and posted it back. Long story short, after 4 weeks and MoM still not receiving it I contacted Royal Mail to start a claim procedure. After sending in my form, receipts and life history they told me that it is not legalto post alcohol over 25% ABV and therefore my claim was invalid so I lost the money and the bottle.
Some thieving postman knows this and basically steals returns to MoM knowing that they won't be investigated. He now has a nasty bottle of Laphroaig and I learned a lesson.
The most expensive bottles have bought and still have is Laphroaig An Cuan Mor at £75.

I paid $150 for a bottle of PVW23 and the Shackleton whisky. I have yet to open them up but the PVW is getting opened for my brother's birthday next february.

@Eli $150 was a steal for the PVW 23! Atleast $250 everywhere I've seen it! I'm trying to talk my self into spending the dough and getting a Brora 30 before no online retailers sell them or the prices go far beyond what I could ever afford.

I found a Port Ellen 4th Official release in a local shop that had been on the shelf since 2006 . The price of 325.00 CDN was way above my 140.00 previous most expensive, a bottle Corryvreckan. Finding such a bottle made me set a new mark.

I'm with Mantisking on the PC7. This summer, a bottle of it for $99 just squeaked under my $100 (USD) cap and became my biggest purchase to date. I've got it planned for next winter, as a side-by-side with an An Turas Mor sample I archived for that exact purpose.
PC7 was the only one in the CS PC line to be found in my parts (Madison, WI). Just based on reviews, I would have preferred to find the PC6. Even, absolutely no disappointment here (says the guy who hasn't opened the bottle yet).

Coming in a close second to the $197 for the HP 25 is the $190 I spent purchasing a bottle on Nikka Miyagikyo 15...at this point I think my per bottle limit is $200, but I don't want to go there too often.

I don't have a "maximum" - if I see value, I will pay for it , as long as it is value - but the most I've ever paid is CDN$1,462.50 (including buyer's premium) at auction for a 1972 Macallan 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt (bilingual English/French label, with original wooden case) I overpaid for this bottle, IMHO, but that was two years ago and even now that bottle is commanding higher prices at auction.

The most I've ever paid for a "drinking" whisky? Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve 2009, over CDN$300 and worth every penny.

Probably around $18,000 for a bottle of the official 2015 Glenwonka release.

I have yet to pay more than $100 CDN for a bottle of whisky, of any kind.
However, in the recent newsletter I received from the KWM, there is a listing of sale items, including 25% off this one: G&M Glen Grant 1952 60 Year - Regular $13,999.99 Hmmm...still a bit out of my price range, I'm afraid.
