Whisky cola....???

I very good friend of mine prefers whisky with cola and every time I'm telling him he kills the whisky. The other day when he was at my place I tried it myself!! First glass was a Glenfiddich 15 and the second one was a Whyte & Mackay 13. Both sherried whiskies, one a single malt and the other a blend. I must admit I could tell very much the difference between the two (I thought cola would have made them taste the same). I admit I really enjoyed the Glenfiddich, but the other one was a waste. I suppose on warm summer nights some whiskies might work nicely with cola. Did you ever have a similar experience?

One year during Passover I joined some friends at a bar before a meeting, and I asked for a diet coke. What I got tasted too sweet so I called over the server and said this didn't taste like diet coke. She said she thought I had said "rye and coke".

I have to admit it did NOT add to my enjoyment of the beverage.

That said, I prefer tonic and lime to gin and tonic. So go figure.

John Hall said that he approves of mixing his whiskies with coke, as the caramel flavours of the whisky and cola compliment each other.

Personally, if I wouldn't drink it straight I wouldn't waste my liver on it mixed with something to make it palatable. And if I WOULD drink it straight, I want to get all the flavours, not mask them.

But as Ralfy says, the best way to drink your whisky is the way you like it.

@bourbondrinker, it's like putting ketchup on caviar. Why?

Yeah, I have a friend who drinks "rye & Coke'--in reality, Canadian whisky (Wisers Deluxe is his standard) and Coca-Cola (although I believe he'll drink Pepsi in a pinch).

When I bought some Wisers Legacy, I took it over to his place for him to try it. He poured some and tried it neat, said "This is really good stuff," then proceeded to fill the glass with cola. I don't offer him "the good stuff" anymore...

@Spitfire I think you're off topic for this thread. You should be posting under the topic "what makes you tear your hair out and run screaming into the night....

Similar experience at a night I hosted work friends, selection of ten US Whiskeys/Bourbons. One of my esteemed colleagues insisted on pouring ginger beer in every glass. I was unconcerned with the 3 JD's but as the night progressed he ruined a steadily improving line up I nearly cried when he filled up his Blantons SFTB despite my best efforts to convince him he was destroying it.

Mixing any liquor (vodka is standard) with any soda is called a ''grogg'' in Swedish. I don't think I've ever had a grogg i liked! Usually the soda masks all flavor except alcohol which comes through and mixes with the soda pop.

Cocktails however is another matter entirely!

@Astroke, I find the Family Lot B & ginger ale is a better pairing for Caviar & Ketchup.

I've never mixed whisky with anything other than water. It wasn't a drink of choice in my twenties (those being vodka and beer) and by the time I discovered whisky I was old enough to appreciate the flavours without mixing in anything. At some point I figure I ought to try it, or at least an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. One of these days...

Cheaper bourbon and other similar American whiskies + Coke is such a common drink in the US that, to me, it's still what such whiskies feel like they're made for when I try to appreciate them neat. "Hmmmm, this Russell's Reserve Rye is OK, but where's the Coke?" This might be part of the reason I've never gotten into bourbon.

On the flipside, back when I first bought a bottle of single malt "blind" (it was Bowmore Legend, and I had no idea what Islay, peated, single malt, or anything else meant), I tried all sorts of things to figure out what people liked about this stuff. After drinking it neat and on the rocks with poor results, I thought "maybe people like this because it's awesome mixed with Coke?" As you might guess, it most certainly was not.

(Of course in hindsight, I see that the problem was peaty inexperience + poor-quality peat!)
