After the postponed edition due to corona, The Maltclan organized its famous and very cozy festival on Sunday 15 January. And of course that included a festival bottling and this time they found a nice first first bourbon barrel with the boys and girls of Wolfburn, the distillery from Thurso. Every visitor was given the opportunity to taste this single cask, which I thought was very neat (see what I did there?).
The nose starts off somewhat closed and needs some patience. But it pays off. White orchard fruit and fresh butter croissants meet me, as well as a little vanilla, icing sugar and licorice. In the background is another touch of sweet and sour pomelo, which is getting louder and louder. Quite herbal, though.
Great body and immediately nice and sweet, almost candy-like on coconut meat, banana cream and white fruit. The alcohol does make itself felt, which also makes it seem a bit spicy. But water is superfluous. A hint of white wine appears, as well as something that reminds me of peach and gooseberry. There is even a subtle salty edge to it, which is highlighted thanks to a beautiful peat smoke development.
The finish is quite peppery and smoky and still offers a bitterness on the deathbed like chestnuts. Makes you long for a second sip and I think that's always a very good sign.
The bottling was offered for sale for 85 EUR and at the time of writing some of the 222 bottles were still available.
