Macduff hardly reaches the market as single malt. It is put out as Glen Deveron. But the lion’s share goes into blends like Williams Lawson’s. Let us try a Macduff that was bottled by the indie Wemyss in 2013.
The nose is honeysweet with a truckload of vanilla, caramel, grain cookies and ginger. Add some citrus as well as some freshly cut grass. Innocent, but not bad at all. A touch of woodsmoke that is quite pleasant.
It is very soft upon arrival and first offers vanilla, ginger and oak. Then the citrus notes emerge, upholstered with some baked apples. The caramel evolves towards toffee. The woodsmoke returns, offering it some depth.
The finish is rather short, but sweet and spicy. The caramel seems to be burnt somewhat.
This malt is a tad too simply and sweet to be top, but apart from that it is still a lot better than the official Glen Deveron bottlings. But it is not grand.
