@Nozinan: I guess if you put 2 underscores in front and after the word it is bold and if you put one it is italic

It's a text-formatting language called Markdown which is quite widely used now. There are a few options for how to bold and italic but I've tried to keep it simple for the formatting guide.

Safest to stick to **bold** and _italic_ if we can.

Just starting to look around and figure out the differences. Things that I've seen so far have already been addressed by others, but I wanted to say Thank You for all of your work updating the site. Working in the IT field, I have an appreciation for all of the hours that it takes to make something like this happen. I appreciate all of your efforts with the new site. Thanks again!

@jeanluc I agree with you that it is safest to stick to something simple that works.

However, in all fairness to my ludditism (is that a word?), I cannot promise to remember to do things correctly... grimacing

@jeanluc & @pierre,

Congratulations on the launch of the newer and improved site. I don't say this often enough, "THANK YOU!" This is a fantastic community and it brings much enjoyment to many whisky lovers.

I agree with your selection of EH Taylor as the bottle used to launch this ship. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy Connosr.

Cheers!

Mark

Not sure if it was me or the site but when I tried to find the bottling for my review I couldn't use the dropdown menus. I had to indicate that the bottle / distillery wasn't listed.

@Nozinan: On the two points above, they are both working as I'd expect for me here. I just sent you a sent Direct Message.

There may be an issue specific to your setup. Let's discuss this on email to investigate further.

Like the new site. Very cool, very modern. One question, will we have actual pictures of the bottles when people upload them or just the animations? I've noticed that many of the bottles cool little cartoon pictures aren't a representation of the real bottle. I really enjoyed having accurate pictures on the last site when they were available and beer advocate does that as well which is very helpful.

Fair question – I'm going to post a separate update about product images as it's a work in progress.

Cool. Great work btw, I'm no IT expert but this looks like it took a lot of hours so thanks to you and everyone who put in the hours to move us forward!

I've made some small improvements to the timeline today.

  • Likes and follows are grouped i.e jeanluc liked GlenDronach, Blanton's and Talisker
  • A preview of the comment is shown on the timeline .ie jeanluc commented "wow cool review, what about the..."

@jeanluc Love the new site, terrific work! I tried uploading a cover image and it's been "processing cover image" for some time now. I reduced the size of the image but it seems it's still trying to process it. Should it take that long or there possibly a better format than a Jpeg to use? Thanks!

Wow, what a great new look! I'm thoroughly enjoying re-discovering Connosr. Still need to look for stuff, but already figures out how to add a video - that was fun. The new 'write a review' took only a few minutes to figure out and I like the fact that there is an image library. Uploading your own photos is also, imho, an improvement. While some of the photos will no doubt be of lesser quality than 'internet stock photo's', it will certainly add a sense of community and charm to it. The text formatting guide is a handy feature, even though I will most likely not use it very much :-)

It looks like this took a lot of effort (I suppose it did), but it will pay off big time. This is state of the art, fellas - well done!!!

I was able to upload a new profile cover photo, but my profile photo remains the same (I know I can change it of course). @jeanluc your profile photo looks very neat in that little circle. How did you manage that?

@jeanluc
jeanluc replied

Thanks @Mancub. jpg is perfect and it should only take a few seconds to process.

You helped us uncover a bug here – it was the space in the filename which made our processing script fail. We'll fix that ASAP. In the mean time I ran renamed it and ran the process manually. Nice image camera boom

(btw – the image processing is where we analyse the photo to find its average colour so we can use that to style the bar under your profile header)

@markjedi1 everyone should have the white circle around their profile images now – it was a problem effecting images carried over from the old site. Mine was white because I uploaded an images on the new platform. Thanks again for identifying the bug beetle

Nothing like getting a project into the wild to test it properly!

@jeanluc Ah, figured it was something small, always the case when putting something this scale together. Thanks for looking into that! Love that the average colour is determined and used for a header, cool feature. Cheers!

@jeanluc , two questions for you:

•What's the best way now to do that "@name" thing so the person gets notified? On the old site, you used to click Reply and that person's name popped into your comment. I don't see that now. And once you've begun your reply and that pop-up comment window is on your screen, you can't scroll the main page behind it to check the spelling of the person you might want to address.

•Did you do some sort of transform on all the old content to use the new formatting options? If so, pretty cool! I just happened to notice that one of my own comments on the following review uses italics, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't even an option before. connosr.com/springbank-10-year-old-whisky-…

@Ol_Jas:

On the old site, you used to click Reply and that person's name popped into your comment.

I've just restored this functionality. It had been disabled unintentionally by a recent update. Clicking the reply icon will now load the @ username as expected, the only exception is when you have written a comment but closed the comment window before sending. In that scenario the draft comment it reloaded. This was added to save the frustration of losing a comment by accidentally closing the comment box.

Did you do some sort of transform on all the old content to use the new formatting options? If so, pretty cool!

In this case it has picked up the *10* in your comment and is showing rendering it as italic.

@jeanluc Also if you start typing @ you should see a list appear showing the usernames for people who have replied on the current page. I may try and extend that to the list 50 commenters.

I've been experimenting with options on the timeline (see my post earlier). The text you describe above is back - but not on mobile where it was a little too wordy for the format.

I just noticed the standard bottle images (when the bottle is not in de database), that reflect the packaging of the brand with a 'blank' label. Very smartly done, gents!

@markjedi1 Thanks Mark, we're moving to this style of bottle illustration across the site, even where the product is listed. There will be product level illustrations as well as the generic label versions.

It's a big piece of work but it turns out that @Pierre is a pretty decent illustrator art wink

I've posted more info about the images here (cc: @casualtorture who also asked about this).
