Caol Ila? Did you say Caol Ila? Well, yes, then I am certainly interested. My favorite Islay whisky! Bring it on. This bottling is the second release by the Belgian Beacon Spirits. For me? The 69th encounter with the pale giant of the Queen of the Hebrides.

But on the nose, this is something quite different. Blind, I do not think I would have thought of Caol Ila, to be honest. It is very narrow, if you know what I mean. I do get some smokiness and the typical lime, but all the way in the back. The nose is dominated by grasses, moss, apples, pears and even some unripe strawberries. The longer I leave it, the sweeter it becomes. I even get some candied pineapple. Different and to be honest I am not yet convinced that I like it.

Ah, but on the palate it is all good! Lovely arrival with an explosion of lime juice, Granny Smith apples, sea salt, vanilla and peppers. Grand! The smokiness goes hand in glove with the sweetness of the fruit and vanilla. Very fresh and lively.

The finish is very nice on citrus and ashes – long too. Ashes until the death.

Reticent, special nose, but bull’s eye on the palate. Hurray! You can still get your hands on this on their website for 95 EUR. Thanks a lot, Bert.
