I was surprised and disappointed to learn that Wiser's Double Still Rye has been discontinued. I may have to grab a bottle or two, since they're on sale. Does anyone (I'm thinking @paddockjudge) know why they decided to halt production of this whisky? J.P. Wiser's has introduced (or re-introduced) a "Triple Barrel" offering, but it doesn't seem to be the same style of product as Double Still Rye.

@OdysseusUnbound Do you know if it's 100% rye? I ask because I've had Canadian rye that was 100% corn.

If it's 100% rye, I wonder if it's being replaced by the Lot 40 rye.

@OdysseusUnbound

@Nozinan I don't think it was 100% Rye. There were two types of rye distillate used, but I think they were blended with corn...The Double Still Rye was nothing like Lot 40...

@OdysseusUnbound , I have no inside info but I think they are consolidating the line-up somewhat, Wiser's Legacy is also getting the axe. Also they are pushing lot 40 a lot more in the US so perhaps they want to reserve some of the pot distilled rye stocks to meet the demand?

I saw the triple barrel business too but there's not much info out there. Would you compare this double rye to their small batch rye from a few years back or is it a completely different beast?

@cricklewood My understanding the Legacy is on hiatus to meet demand for the lot 40 CS. I think there would be a very unhappy @paddockjudge if it were gone for good (though he can make his own).

@cricklewood I never tried the small batch you mention. In fact, I didn't really respect the whisky from my home and native land until I started coming here and learning from fine folks like @Nozinan and @paddockjudge Yes, even a teacher can learn ! stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

@Nozinan I know Legacy has quite the following I think @paddockjudge wouldn't be the only one to be upset. I suppose there lies the beauty of the canadian system of blending, since they can always re-create a recipe from existent stocks later rather than having to make sure they have planned in advance to produce a certain type of mashbill for example.

I think I will pick up a bottle of the double rye locally the SAQ has some and it's reasonably priced at 30$. Altough I'm holding out for that northern border collection and I need to try Dissertattion too! Sigh...I have whisky fever.

@cricklewood If I can't get a hold of every item in the Northern Border Collection, I definitely want to grab another bottle of Dissertation...and maybe a bottle of Last Barrels...It's a shame I'm not a billionaire...

@OdysseusUnbound It's a shame we all are not billionaires.

If I manage to get some of the rare bottles for personal use the only circumstances under which I would open them would be in the context of a tasting with the presence of those who would appreciate them like fellow Connosrs.

We did this with the 2014 BTACs pretty successfully. I recommend an Ontario Northern Border summit.

If there isn't enough juice to bottle, that's supply - If no one wants to buy it, that's demand.

@cricklewood I did grab Last Barrel and Dissertation. I would buy Dissertation again and again when I find Last Barrel interesting but not being superior to Legacy, although it is still improving with air exposure. Anyway those could also be part of a future tasting session.

@Nozinan I like your idea of a summit. I am also asking all my Connosr friends from Ontario to think of me if they are able to grab a few of these bottles from the Northern Border Collection. I would take at least one of each.

@Robert99 One each of all 5?

I would expect them to be as available in Quebec as in Ontario. But if I see some I'll try to buy 3 or 4 dozen of each to satisfy all my Connosr friends... smiley

@Robert99 Thanks for the recommendation, from what I gather Dissertation is really a spectacular dram. My brother is headed to Pembroke first week-end of October, I'm going to ask him to pick up a couple for me. I was kind of hoping Northern border would be available by then sigh

From what I remember reading Corby has made the whole collection available to all the liquor boards in Canada but it's up to them to make the necessary steps to purchase some. The SAQ hasn't made much bold moves on the Canadian whisky front of late and they are not very forthcoming with their plans so who knows.

I would be all in for a summit if there is room for a junior member, this would be a great time to finally meet some of the esteemed members of the board. I owe you a dram at the very least @Nozinan .

According to @JasonHambrey, Legacy has indeed been discontinued.

...Wiser’s Legacy, which is being discontinued…the last is on shelves now…

That's from here: insearchofelegance.net/blog/2017/…

Maybe they need to free up some of those square bottles... wink They're using that same design for the new 15 yr old expression that should be hitting shelves very soon.

@Nelom I've also heard from as reliable a source, that it's just on hiatus.

Who to believe?

Not that I care. i don't appreciate Legacy the way others do... I may learn to like it more after it's gone...

@cricklewood I really, really like Dissertation. I'll likely buy at least one more bottle to bunker, maybe two. I'm not as worried about Legacy. I've never had it, so I don't know what I'm missing. And there's Lot 40 for a high Rye fix. And hopefully Lot 40 Cask Strength soon. pray

Regarding the Legacy hiatus, it's a matter of interpretation. What we know (and i assume i know your source too @Nozinan) is that if it were to come back it would likely be rebranded under a different name. No plans to re-introduce it yet. The quality of juice is certainly not why it isn't selling! I assume it isn't selling, which is why they remove it. What i heard from Don was that it "didn't fit in the brand portfolio" anymore.

Also interesting to think what Corby's vision is for the future. "Northern Border Collection" seems more targeted at the south than the north.

Also, i believe northern border it is being released Oct 16 at a Toronto pop up whisky store for the KGBO's "whisky month", and will be there for a month before being shipped elsewhere. Online orders will start then too, i believe. That is what helloLCBO told me, though, and they've been wrong before. But if it does show up online on the 16th, i'd buy some online and not wait for it to come to local stores.

@JasonHambrey Now you're making me want to go out ant buy Legacy... well I won't darn it. @paddockjudge blends his own and makes it taste better.

But if Charlie Angus wins the leadership, since he's from up north, I've committed to toasting his victory with @Paddockjudge's choice - legacy - so I'll have to buy a bottle.

@MadSingleMalt, to address your query,

"supply and demand"—what do you mean there?

...simply put, it isn't selling.

@JasonHambrey, I concur with your interpretation of the future direction for Legacy. It simply isn't performing at retail. The beauty of Canadian whisky is that it can be blended from existing stocks. End users sometimes lose sight of the bigger picture: the bottom line drives the business.

We are indeed fortunate to have a large selection of top flight releases from Hiram Walker. I've stated it before and I'll state it again, I am quite certain these super-premiums do not contribute a lot to the bottom line.

...as for the question, "why isn't it selling?" I suspect NAS and $50 per bottle might keep the cool kids away. I consider Wiser's Legacy, all batches, to be the pinnacle of Canadian Blended whisky. It is a Connoisseur's whisky. Frankly, there just aren't enough whisky drinkers (with the required heightened palate to appreciate it for what it is) to support this masterful creation . Wiser's Legacy is one of the greatest bargains in Whisk(e)y. It will be missed by those who truly know.
