Glengoyne 21 Year Old Sherry Cask

Strong nose of sugared plums and sherry along with hints of vanilla, cedar, citrus, caramel and anise. Unpeated.

Sweet and slightly sharp on the tongue, giving way to a warm, mellow mouth feel.

Howdy

I had to boot up my old laptop to dig out my review of A'bunadh, but that gives me an excuse to post that and some of my other older reviews on here. :-)

I gave the A'bunadh an 85, but judging from other reviews, I may have gotten my sample from a less than ideal batch (unfortunately I did not write down which batch it was). For further comparison, I gave the Macallan sherry cask a 70 (I am not a fan of most of their bottlings, but I did squirrel away a bottle of cask strength on many vehement recommendations before it was discontinued) and have yet to try my sample of Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or.

Hope this helps!

Are you a hard grader? How does this compare to Aberlour A'budunadh for instance in your rating scale?

@whiskyfacile

N: wet wood, sweet choco and cherry, nutty

P: juicy and lovely sweet, choco and amazing red fuits

F: mon chery with an oak touch.

well, basically we found it more complex; the 17 is a great "everyday dram", but compared to this 21 misses a little bit of 'magic', and the sherry influence is obviously softer... we reviewed the 17 (in italian, but we'll post the english version here in a while) here: whiskyfacile.com/2012/06/… did you try both?

How's it compare to the 17?

Colour : the colour gives it up. we're entering sherry aging here. i like! Copper! i could be looking at this for some time, Lovely.

Nose: Creamy sherry, with sweet dark fruits, and hints of baked apple strudel .

Palate: Rich, thick, sherry goodness. dark fruits (prunes, sultanas dipped in honey and liquor, also some dates). Moist Oak.

Finish : Longish, sherry, sweet, spice and cinnamon. I like this !.

Bottom line :

This is by far the best of all 3. i am a sherry addict, so it hits a soft corner in my heart, but this is done right. great after meal companion, for a cold winter day. If i were to buy a single expression, i would go for this one, in spite of the price (not that 80 is so much for a 21 year old) .

You had me at "creamy sherry"! I will be looking for a bottle of this. Thanks for the review!
