Glenrothes 1988 vintage

I was at a Glenrothes tasting recently and was presented with six different expressions for the evening. While the other five failed to tickle my fancy there was this gem from 1998 (bottled in 2008) that stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

A lovely nose with a strong bourbon burst. Lots of caramel and leather sprinkled with crushed almonds and cinnamon. Very well rounded indeed.

The palate is full-bodied and creamy with a honey and chocolate syrup consistency garnished with black pepper corns. You can keep swishing this one around for a while and not get bored.

The cinnamon finish is long and satisfying. A lovely dram that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

The nose is spicy with fruit overtones, a little brash for a 20 year old, but fairly complex with sweetness of vanilla and a touch of oak.

The pallet is creamy sweet that moves in to spice on the finish which lasts a while with a touch of orange rind. The sherry is rather pronounced in this expression but not over the top.

While I tend to like the 85 a little better as it has a bit more personality, this is a new and lovely expression from Glenrothes.
