Glenrothes Vintage Reserve

Glenrothes lies in the heart of the Speyside and is one of 5 distilleries in Rothes. She was founded in 1878 and is best known for her fruity whiskies. The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve is the entry level malt and hence the successor of the Select Reseve. No vintage, no age statement and bottled at the minimum drinking strength. Hence it cost slightly less than 40 EUR. But do you get value for money?

The nose is soft on mostly citrus fruit and vanilla with a good helping of honey. Some red berries in the background. It can use some time to breath. Then it also offers some pepper and toffee.

It is very creamy – a pleasant surprise – and soft. The red berries turn blue on the palate, while the citrus and vanilla remain in the lead. Some nuts appear. This is a step up from the Select Reserve, which I found to be a real lightweight. This one has more going for it.

The finish is very short, unfortunately, and it turns a bit bitter at the death.

Flawless, but far from exciting mal. But hey, it is their entry level malt for little money. So yes, this is bang for your buck, even though it is not a top malt.

I've had a couple of bottles of this and will buy more. Kinda a Speyside daily sipper for me, like Glenmorangie 10 for Highlands and Laphroaig 10 for Islay. All three very good buys. Hope they keep it in the lineup, as I find none of the others (from Glenrothes, that is) worth buying.
