This cask of Macduff was distilled on 2nd March 1990 and bottled on 28 September 2011, making it a 21 Year Old. It’s a single cask bottling from A.D. Rattray.

The nose is sweet and nutty. Make that roasted nuts. And milk chocolate. Vanilla, honey and some ginger too. Cake! Mild on the spice front. A touch of citrus, primarily oranges, makes this an enticing nose. Slightly dusty, too. Give it a few minutes to open up.

With such a high ABV, it comes as no surprise that the attack is peppery. Wonderfully mouth coating and creamy, slightly bitter from the wood, with again a sweet nuttiness. Some silt towards the end.

The finish is a life or death battle between sweet and salt and last quite long.

For truly good Macduff, like this one, you really need to look at the independent bottlers. This is a completely different whisky than the standard Glen Deveron. That one does not even come close. Around 75 EUR.
