Pig's Nose 5 Year Old

My first impression of this bottle was that it smells and tastes exactly like every cheap Scotch I've ever had. Now that I've gone through half the bottle, my impression has changed somewhat.

There's actually quite a bit of malt on the nose. Mostly fruit (orange and grape), also vanilla, a bit of oak, and a touch of sulphur smoke. It's not exactly the cleanest nose in the world but it has a certain charm and surprising complexity when you really analyze it.

The whisky is smooth and supple in the mouth. Initially sweet, followed by some prickly young grains, but not too much. A salty note keeps things interesting. Very easy-drinking.

Not much of a finish to speak of. But there is nothing unpleasant in the aftertaste, so it has that going for it.

Overall, this whisky is better than I first gave it credit for. The nose and arrival in particular make it worth drinking. At full price it's not much of a bargain but at clearance price I was glad I bought it. I'd rate it a notch over the typical bottom-shelf blends.


Pig's Nose is a blended scotch brand owned by Spencerfield Spirits (who also own the blended malt Sheep Dip and Edinburgh Gin), which was founded by former Glenmorangie marketing director Alex Nicol. Pig's Nose was first created in 1977, though the current bottling was re-blended by Richard Paterson, from single malts from Speyside, Islay and the Lowlands, and grain whisky from Invergordon. Their slogan is "'Tis said that our scotch is as soft and as smooth as a pig's nose." Could this be true?

The colour is a medium gold. The nose is scrumptious with juicy malt, light honey and freshly cut grass. Quite floral, perhaps a little too much. Golden Grahams, very biscuity. Milk chocolate. Butter. Water brings out more cereal notes. There is a delicacy here that I wasn't expecting from something with a name like this!

On the palate we have that lovely crisp malt; again, very biscuity. Some black pepper, soft oak and very light vanilla. Lemon/lime and a wee touch of spice. Beautifully done, if a little too light, especially if you add water.

The finish is gentle but long and developing with more chocolate (dark this time), green apple and citrus. Not a hugely complex whisky, nor one that blows you away but an extremely drinkable, pleasant, cheery dram.


My wife, being the awesome wife she is, picked me up a very sexy whisky calender for Christmas this year. 24 different whisky samples from around the world, differing ages, differing styles, different countries....

God it's enough to make a man grin!!

I'd drunk all the whiskies that I'd had before, then I started in on the entry level single malts that I'd never tried before.

Still got a few of those left to be honest.

But I decided to change things up the last couple days and move into some blended whiskies before heading back to single malt territory.

I'd tried Johnnie Walker Gold Label 18 yr old the other day, but now it was time to move into the farmyard.

Into Pig's Nose territory!

Now I'd tried it's big brother, Sheep Dip Old Hebridean 1990 Vintage, a smokey giant vatted whisky involving malts from Ardbeg, Dalmore and Fettercairn.

Pigs Nose however is not a vatted whisky, but a blend and from what I've heard there are something like 26 different single malts that have gone into this little guy, malts from Islay, Speyside and the Highlands.

I'd really enjoyed Sheep Dip Old Hebridean quite a lot so I was looking forward to the Pigs Nose.

So I crack the cute little sample bottle with it's red wax seal and pour the contents into the glencairn.

Surprisingly dark for such a young whisky, I believe it comes in at around 8 years of age, so I'm willing to bet that there is a fair amount of caramel coloring that have been added, but I could be wrong.

But enough about it's looks, it's time to nose!

Sweet, very very sweet. There is a hint of peat to it, quite a bit of honey, citrus, specifically pineapples, some other fruits in there, hints of sour apple, sultanas, peaches, caramel, underneath it all a hint of pepper.

Very very sweet.

It's not bad, just a sweet nose. Actually it's sorta sucking me in the longer I nose it.

Time for a drink!


Woooeeee! That's sweet.

Initial burst in the mouth is caramel, then honey, oranges, more caramel, hint of stewed prune, lots of different spices, bit of pepper.

However it's gone sickly sweet, too young.

Short spicy dry finish with the caramel and honey coming through clean as day. The peat reappears for a second and then disappears again.

Not bad for a blend, however the over the top sweetness kills it just a bit for me. It's nothing that I could have more then a dram of at a time, however it might be nice to use with people who think all blends are the same.

However the price is where I start sighing, I want to say that it sits at around the $75 to $85 price point which is sadly too much to pay for this in my opinion. If I want something sweet I'd head to Macallan 12 yr old, if I wanted something complex I'd head to Talisker 10 year old (and save $20 or so dollars) if I wanted a blend I'd grab Johnnie Walker Green Label (grab it while you still can my friends because they're going fast!) But I don't think I'd pick up a bottle of Pig's Nose. Just too sweet for my palate.

I've got two more on the way as each calender is different! The only thing that's the same is the 50 year old Speyside that each calender has. Watching what the different people on facebook were getting each day is what made me decide to grab 2 more. potentially 65+ different whiskies for me to sample?! sign me up!

Just picked up a bottle of Pig's Nose here in southeast Florida for the amazing price of $19.99!!!! Had previously seen it for $32 but at that lower price, could not resist even though I tend to prefer a higher ABV Scotch. Will break it open this evening


Spencerfield Spirits has more than just whisky on the market. They also produced the celebrated Edinburgh Gin. But they are probably best known for their Sheep Dip, a blend of 8 year ols whisky, that has been on the market since 1970. Seven years later, this Pig’s Nose was released, which is – if you believe the label – as soft as the nose of a pig. Insiders claim it to be a blend of Lowland, Speyside and Islay whisky on top of a base of grain whiskies.

The nose is young and malty, to be sure, but also round and creamy. Caramel (a lot, in fact), sultanas and some dried pineapple. Peaches and pepper. Breakfast cereals. A hint of peat.

It confirms its creamy character on the palate, honeysweet and very spicy. It becomes very fruity, now. Prunes, sultanas again, but unfortunately it becomes much, much to sweet. Truckloads of caramel.

The finish is slightly drying and rather short. The peat returns for a moment, which is fun, but the young age also makes this rather sharp.

Quite pleasant, especially for that age and price. Even the Johnnie Walker Black Label is no match for this one imho. According to people in the know, no less than 29 whiskies were used in the composition of this blend. It should therefore not come as a big surprise that it was created by Whyte & Mackay’s own Richard Patterson.
