Whyte & Mackay Special blended scotch. Not my fondest but it makes an acceptable ginger whisky with ginger ale and ice.

A rare all-bourbon night for me. Maker's 46, Booker's, Elijah Craig 18, and I'll probably end with a little rye -- either Bulleit 95 or THH Sazerac. I'm usually a little tittly after a few, so my last dram of the night will be determined by whichever one's easier to reach.

I'm having a taste-off between my old Favorite, Talisker 10, and a new bottle of Highland Park 12. Pretty sure 10 will win again, but I hear good things about 12.

Just poured myself a dram of Longrow 18 year-old, and had my first two sips. Nice stuff... very interesting development on the palate. First impression is that it isn't quite living up to expectations (I've read some very glowing reviews), but I suspect it's going to take more time to really get to know this one.

Enjoying a generous dram of Noah's Mill (one of my favorite bourbons) while watching Ken Burn's film about Jazz. What an awesome, comprehensive multi part documentary about Jazz and Swing. The drink, the music....wow watch a match!

Had a Four Roses single barrel with a old friend with lunch at Big Star in Chicago, a great afternoon out with a great old friend . Could have spent all day hanging out . Plus Big Star has a fantastic bourbon selection.

Hellyer's Road Tasmanian Single malt and with some time in a glass it is proving to be a very beautifully made Whisky. Initially I thought it young and rather brash, but not so after being in the glass for best part of an hour or so. This is a freshly opened bottle and the first pour was rendolent of hazel nuts as many young Tassie Whiskies are. The bottle doesn't mention peat, but subtle peat there is!

The nose after a while is incredible and the palate malty sweet and delicious. I've no doubt that a month or so in large glass and this Hellyer's Road Whisky will dazzle and even at this early stage, it is so reminiscent of the better Highland Parks, it is uncanny: Sweet, gentle, peat both sophisticated and herbaceous are the backbone of this Whisky and I'll certainly be back to do an indepth review.

Cheers!

@HughesDePayens

I have three bottles open at the moment.

Highland Park 12, Knob Creek, and Jameson

I've only had one pour of the Knob Creek thus far, but I enjoyed it a lot, especially after adding ~a teaspoon or so of water. The HP12 is absolutely awesome. I'm really enjoying that one.

The Jameson is just a fun, simple, and easy drinking experience. I had it neat the other day, and it was really lacking, especially since I had the small pour after a dram of Knob Creek so the flavour of it just seemed really limited.

I intend on picking up something along the lines of an Old Pulteney, and I'm also going to get a Glenfiddich 12 in the next little while.

@teebone673 Woops - glad you caught my brain fart.....Yes - I meant the Lagavulin 12 yr; not sure why, but I do get the Trident gum minty/spice on the finish...Either way it's a fine dram indeed!

@Gunny283 So...Who won the battle between the Talisker 10 yr vs Highland Park 12 yr?

Last night I had a healthy dose of AnCnoc 16 yr...Not sure what to make of it, but it was pretty good - just dunno if it's good enough to buy another bottle?

@FMichael , Talisker 10 is still king. The main difference is that the finish lasts so much longer for Talisker. I can still feel it long after it's gone.

Last night I enjoyed a private barrel pick I did with a group of friends. It was a short barrel of Four Roses only producing about 56 bottles(@cask). OESK recipe and delicious. While it's totally drinkable at proof, adding a touch of water opened it up nicely.

Just lined up three whiskies for tasting tonight. Gonna bang out a review for each, since I'm in the mood for a low-key friday with some friends of the liquid variety..

First up... Old Pulteney 17; then the G&M Mortlach 15; and finally the Longrow 18.

...and off we go!
